In these circumstances, the clutch would not disengage the transmission, because the problem is downstream. If the clutch pedal was kept fully depressed during this manoeuvre, from the instant that the bevel box seized, there is a reasonable chance that the engine is unharmed. Could the engine still be fired up afterwards? There may be some gearbox damage.

Anyway, you are lucky that it did not end up worse.

At the time then engine would not turn over. The clutch was inoperable. It was impossible to disengage the transmission. The drive shaft is now disconnected and the engine starts fine. Just hoping there is no transmission damage.

Yes, I understand. It must be the shock loading that did it. Let's hope the mechanical damage is minimal, and the main thing is that there were no injuries, but I can see that an incident like that would knock your confidence in the little car hugely.

Our M3W is a 2013 with about 2000 miles. Up until this incident we've had no problems other than the horn stopping working a couple of times.

Headed over to the dealer today to see how they propose to handle the instant, total failure of the bevel box. What is the explanation? Hoping, hoping they relay something that can restore my confidence in the safety of this machine. The back wheel locking up and going into a skid again has me spooked.

Is there a new design since mine was built? Can't imagine I'm interested in replacing the broken one with the same model.

Just having a brain scratching moment or two here, as mine is currently under diagnosis with the dealer for making very screechy mechanical sounding noises from (I'm almost certain) is the back end.

Did yours make any noises before going screech, OMG! and sitting in a lot of smelly smoke I wonder..?

That must have been a horrendous slide to stop. Thank goodness it was safely concluded.

I was just thinking the same thing. If it were a box on its way out, it would have been making some noise.

GreyGoose, I know you weren't driving, but had your BB been noisy from the get go or quiet? If it were noisy all along, it may have been hard for your wife to discern normal from, as Steve put it, OMG...

If it were quiet, it was probably a catastrophic failure like a tooth braking etc and locking up the box. I can't imagine bearings or something rotating and setting up as being quiet while going south.

But as Steve's has just gone through as well as many others here, it's probably due to the lack of oil or oil turned to tar.

Either way it's crap now, and not just in your wife's underwear. Knickers to you UK guys. smile

I hope in both cases that they resolve this with better products, although Steve's was supposedly the latest and greatest being a '14 model. A rebuild of confidence it also very important to both of you.
