Ooh, I love that "old A272." My folks live in the Wallops, and when I was still living with them I used to have a girlfriend in Winchester. Late night returns homewards on the section from Sparsholt up across Stockbridge Down, down through the village, then turning off the rise out of Stockbridge to sweep past Danebury and past the back of the airbase. One of my very favourite drives, which almost made coming home from the GF's house worthwhile wink

Where I am now, in the southwestern outer suburbs of Toronto, there are very few really good drives. Too many of the roads are old lot lines and concession roads, all based on 19th century military surveys, so they're all straight lines and right-angles, and out in the sticks can all blend into one unmemorable lattice, being numbered consecutively from south to north or from west to east. Added to which there are usually unfeasibly low speed limits and stop signs at all the corners frown

However, there are one or two good jaunts around the Niagara Escarpment, where roads tend to have the "proper" combination of sweeping bends and undulating straights, and even a hairpin or two. My favourite route has some good local names, too: take Guelph Line past Mount Nemo and through Lowville, then Appleby Line up to Rattlesnake Point, pick up Nassagaweya 5th or 6th Line to #15 Sideroad, cross the Nassagaweya-Esquesing Townline (try saying that after an evening in the pubwine), and return home through the more prosaically-named Georgetown and Milton to Oakville.

Thank goodness you are no where near wallops in Geordie land .
A wallop up here is a clout ( smack ) around the ear or bottom off one of your parents for being naughty as a young child .

I'll add to the 3081 Peter mentioned,

Doing the full leg from Shepton Mallet to Ringwood, it's a great run.

Equally the run avoiding the A303 from Middle Wallop up through Larkhill over Salisbury plains and the back down through the Deverills through Mere back to Gillingham quite a pleasant run on a packed trunk road Friday or bank hols.

No.1 is Ross-Goodrich-Monmouth-Tintern-Chepstow Racecourse roundabout and travel back same route to Ross (my route to work !)

No 2 is still to be confirmed : Roger S has a 100 mile route planned for me, just waiting for Henrietta to return... waiting

How near is "near"?
Living where I do - West-ish Wales, we have access to Brecon beacons/Pembrokeshire/Cardiganshire/Gower etc all reachable for a drive of varying distance.
There are MANY good routes of varying types.
A4069 Black mountain Rd Ammanford to llangadog is very popular - but watch for sheep and speed enforcement and some isiots drive
It's often a case of how long do I have that determines where to go drive
We have coast routes/inland routes/roads varying from a to lanes/tracks
Plenty of coffee/food locations.
Hmmmmmm.....
I am still "of this earth" and not in heaven yet "pinch". cloud9

The road to Applecross turn off A896 at top of Loch Kishorn, 11 miles of very narrow twisting rising & falling road. There are some stunning views. I've not done it in my M3W yet & I suspect some of the hairpins will be difficult.

The A93 from Spittal of Glenshee heading north towards Glenshee ski centre. There is about 4 miles of twisty lumpy road that you can get some speed on to realy test the bump stops. I'll be dissappointed if they ever upgrade it.

I believe that if you go North from Applecross on the coast road, you will find more potholes than you have ever seen in your life all put together.

Sismple. I am lucky enough to live in s e wales - monmouth/abergavenny. Almost any road heading nw from us towards the brecon beacons / black mountains is great for both bikes and sports cars. There is a choice depending on whether you want a b road thrash or a country viewing bimble. Head towards bwylth and on to rhayader. Or maybe the coast at abereiron?

Policing isnt excessive until you get to north wales..
