Back around '75 myself and 3 school pals hired a small cabin cruiser from Gloucester. Severn, Worcester & Birmingham, part of the Grand Union, north around Brum and back down to Stourbridge and along the Severn. All in two weeks. There are a lot more canal sections open now, as I have discovered since joining the IWA. Have been a member of the Cotswold Canals Trust for a number of years (and now in the Company of Proprietors of the Stroudwater, or something like that will have to dig out the certificate), plus a year with Hereford & Gloucester. Don't own a boat, though I wouldn't mind a small dayboat cruiser, except for the expense (money goes into Mog & LR), however, almost next best thing - occasionally training to be a TugMaster with Cotswold Canals Trust... Not quite the same as my Merchant Navy days! Was that thread drift?? Perhaps just a little.

As an 18 year old waiting for his exam results with his mates we did this same trip Graham. Stourbridge for 7 days, out and back on a canal boat. 12 of us on the boat all waiting for our exam results and sharing that time in life when you get your first set of wings.
It was amazing, some funny moments but those are not for an on-line forum, at least not this one.
Funny to think back then we all took it in turns at a local BT Red callbox to phone home and get our results. Mine were fair to middling- I ended up in computers instead of a profession, what a laugh. It was surprisingly good fun. Just don't bend over to pick up the soap in the on-board shower. Nuff'said
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Slightly belated welcome from me too Moley, apologies. You'll enjoy TM.
We've also enjoyed a couple of narrow boat trips on the Leeds & Liverpool and the Calder & Hebble Navigation. Lovely relaxing times with a gentle pace of life.
We also spent a week on the Caledonian Canal with SWMBO's mum and dad a few years ago, sadly now no longer possible. We did the full Inverness to Ft. William and return trip. Great scenery, with some lovely eateries along the way. Well worth trying!
Philip.

Started & finished my Day Skippers course for a week along the Caledonian Canal before heading out around the islands 20 years ago. at the time it was the hottest week on record for end of May at 94F. So hot and no wind we only got the sails up twice for about 20 minutes. However, the highlight was taking the dingy right into Fingal's Cave. Shortly after, Customs & Excise came by our boat asking if we had seen anything suspicious. We happened to mention we had been into Fingal's Cave and they then left to go and take a look. Took them an hour to back out of there as there boat was about 3 foot longer than ours and they couldn't turn around like we could. Made us laugh....
Sorry for the thread drift.
