I have seen some french drivers just hold theirs (blipper that is) out of the window when approaching the gate.

So my thoughts are
1 it will work perfectly and confuse all french drivers behind who think I am in the wrong lane laugh2
2 it doesn't work on the screen but there are alternative solutions swmbo
3 when fitted the whole heated screen wiring becomes a transponder and all gates are opened as car approaches 10km out and we all pass through for free!! redcard

I rather like stopping at the toll, climbing out, walking around the car (with a pleasant smile to the driver behind), buying my ticket and then returning to the car, again with a smile to the driver.

Asbojohn,

You could also try Vinci autoroute services here: http://www.vinci-autoroutes.com/fr/conditions-circulation which is where I got mine from.

It works on all the autoroutes and also in >90% of the secure Vinci car parks.

They are very specific about where you need to put the transponder on the windscreen (high up, centrally behind the mirror, in an area not covered by heat reflecting foil or heated windscreen wires) but in practice we've found it isn't critical at all. I don't fix mine to the window and my wife just holds it up as we approach the barrier. You can see the detectors, usually either above and to the left (i.e. drivers side) or centrally above the car as you approach the barriers.

In the Mog, we're hopefully going to hold it just above the windscreen (if we've got the top down) or out of the side screen window if not.

It really does make toll roads much easier, and it's great to see the French expressions as you drive through without stopping... especially when they have assumed you are in the wrong lane.

P.S. I've just realised this thread was started in 2012. It took me a while to workout why it wasn't in the new posts list on the left of the screen blush

Unfortunately for me the only system available to cover Italian residents is for heavy transport frown

PS. I had a moment of hope with Vinci Autoroutes but then this popped up: "In order to subscribe, thanks to provide a statement of account from an account open in a french bank or a foreign bank having at least a banking house in Metropolitan France or in the Principality of Monaco."

I will have to check further.

PPS. I just found in the FAQ of Vinci Autoroutes:

"Disposer d’un compte bancaire ouvert auprès d’un établissement bancaire situé dans l’un des pays de la zone "Single Euro Payments Area"(ou zone SEPA).

Résider dans l’un des pays suivants : France métropolitaine, Monaco, Allemagne, Belgique, Espagne, Grande-Bretagne, Italie, Luxembourg, Pays- Bas, Portugal, Suisse."

Which, if I understand correctly means:
"Having an bank account with a bank located in a country of the "Single Euro Payments Area" (or SEPA).

Reside in one of the following countries: France, Monaco, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland."

Which probably means I can get one of their tags. I'm going to give it a try anyway.

PPPS. (how many post, post scripts can you have) It seems to have worked. In theory I should receive my tag on Wednesday. Hope it arrives because we leave first thing Thursday morning. I'm not too worried if it doesn't because we are often in France, next time will be September.

This is what we do when using it in the Mog, it works fine like that.

I didn't put a screen fixing on as I thought if I did I'd be quite likely to forget to remove it when parking up, leading to it getting pinched or rained on.

Sanef tag worked perfectly for me, every time, roof up or down. Mounted centrally above the mirror, inside the heated screen. Worked in situ, even in pouring rain. But if it failed for some reason, it's easy enough to slide the tag out of its mount and hold out of the window (or above the screen, hood off). We never needed to. smile

Keep ours in the glove compartment, gives my wife something to do as it's her job to hold the 'magic box' as we approach the barrier. The toll charges are debited automatically and the statement arrives the following month. Must admit that every year there is a moment of apprehension as we approach the barrier for the first time in case it no longer works but never had any problems.
The look on the faces of fellow Brits as they queue and we go on the left hand side unhindered is priceless.

Thanks for the updates Nick and Andrew.
Hopefully we'll be OK with the transponder inside the car behind the heated screen thumbs

The actual tags are free. One just pays a forty euro refundable deposit. Many autoroute toll plazas have offices where you can pick up a tag and do the paperwork.

Another good tactic is taking off your motorbike gloves to hoak out either a card or coins! It seems to take a new dimension when they see you handing over the money (they think it's over) and you then reverse the whole process by putting the gloves on again! (Ooh .. it's best if you're actually on a bike - enjoy)

Thats even fun at the Tesco fuel pumps! The guy waiting behind me, in a Morgan, was muttering away to himself.
