Still having problems with my 1983 4/4 it has a cvh engine, and to date I have cleaned out the fuel filter, cleaned the breather pipes, and felt the vacuum pipes (they compress and seem to be supple, I have replaced the distributer cap, rotor arm, ignition amplifier, coil (these are Intermotor brand) and checked the leads also the plugs are a nice light brown colour and the car runs OK for about 18 miles then it looses power, and starts to chug I have to rev it at traffic light sand when I got home it cut out and wold not start for about 10 minutes. I would be grateful for any suggestions, does anybody know of a garage in Liverpool who could help?, I would go to Lifes only they are very busy.

I have used Powertune in Widnes for a Westfield. 1750 cc with twin 40's in the past and they got it running quite well.
They have a rolling road so can simulate your problem.

They have a website for contact details.

If you are saying it runs fine for 18 miles then I would be investigate the fuel supply. Ie dirt in carburettor, fuel pump, tank breather or even dirt in the tank.

Good luck in finding the problem.

Does it miss fire when it starts loosing power? Sound like possible fuel issue or condenser braking down as it gets hot. Have seen this caused by burnt valve not seating properly went it gets hot hence loss of power. Does it burn oil, look at exhaust and see if black or it whitish grey, if sooty the get a compression test on all cylinders, if one is low could be valve or leaking gasket between 2 cylinders that gets worse as engine heats up.

Hope you resolve easily.

Does the car have an automatic choke?
If so, check that the choke is fully deactivating when the engine is hot. If not, try backing off the choke mechanism (loosen the cylindrical part and rotate) - with the air filter off, you will see which way to turn it - away from choke activation.
Better still, fit a new carburettor with a manual choke.

Check the diaphragms on the carb. If you have an electirc choke there should be three of them. I had this problem with my cvh 4/4 and it fixed it.

Might seem a daft idea but the distance you quote and things changed made the grey matter stir.....have you tried driving with the fuel cap off to see if it makes a difference? You would not be the first to have a fuel vent blockage!
