1960 +4 4 seater with TR3 Engine, Mossbox

I'm having some friends over this weekend to help pull the engine so that I can have it fully rebuilt. I have run into a little bit of a problem conceptualizing how to pull the engine though and would love some guidance.

So far I have:

1. Removed all engine accessories
2. Disconnected Exhaust
3. Disconnected all electrical
4. Disconnected radiator hoses, pulled radiator, removed waterpump and waterpump housing
5. Removed oil pan
6. Disconnected and pulled aside driveshaft from the rear of the moss box
7. Unbolted the mossbox (blue) from the high speed input shaft cover (pink) and from the chassis.
8. Removed handbrake and clutch linkage
9. Unbolted the engine from the clutch bellhousing (orange)

PINK and ORANGE are integral and cannot be seperated from what I can tell

Now I've kind of reached a point where I don't know what to do next. The Gearbox (blue) doesn't want to pull back any further but I believe I need to remove it from the input shaft cover (pink and orange). The input shaft cover will NOT be able to be removed from the car because it will not slide forward or backwards through the firewall. This means I will not be able to remove the engine still bolted to the input shaft cover. If I remove the engine from the bellhousing (orange), I fell that I will bend the input shaft.

Am I supposed to remove the mossbox and then slide the high speed input shaft aft to disengage it from the engine? and then pull the engine?

A remote mounted gearbox is cool and all, but I'm used to input shafts being a few inches long, not feet! (there's a joke in there somewhere)

...Well I guess I solved my problem. Just realized why the center dash panel is bolted in and can be removed smile

I've seen the bell housing disconnected, engine moved slightly forward, tilted and removed. With some I thing hte gearbox can come out as one too.

Read,

Are you only rebuilding the motor, or the complete drive train? you do not need to remove gearbox, bellhousing or anything (even the radiator) to get the motor out.

If you unbolt the engine from the bellhousing and use a load leveler on your engine crane you can slide the motor up and out. I would suggest that you take the load on the crane and then remove the engine mounts as this allows you to swing the motor once you have it lifted.

It takes a little bit of juggling, but I have done it twice very recently. it goes back even easier. Both times I have done it by myself

The important thing is slow and steady, a little bit at a time if it gets stuck, back off the lift and look where the catch is, free it and progress.

Good luck, it is a fun project. thumbs

+1 to just removing the engine.

With the caveat that I've only extracted crossflows from four wheelers. With a crossflow, you don't need much tilt on the engine, but a bit of twist.

In my opinion because you have gone as far as you have the easiest option is to lift up the rear of the bellhousing close to the gearbox so that the rear of the gearbox clears the chassis cross member that it sits on, undo the bolts that hold it to the bellhousing and remove it backwards. The pinion shaft will probably come with it but if it doese'nt just pull it out separately.
As you have discovered, remove the centre panel in the bulkhead and the engine together with the bell housing will come up and out with some slant on it towards the back. Chances are the bellhousing will need some fettling in the clutch release mechanism if it hasn't been done for a while. May even need sleeving. Most do but may have been done already at that age. Put some easier to undo bolts in the bulkhead centre panel when you put it back together! good luck.

Thanks for all the replies! Now that the center panel is removed I don't think this will be a problem at all. I did hacksaw off the starter cone from the front pulley too to give an extra 4" of clearance at the front of the engine. Couldn't use the hand starter anyways.

While the engine is out I'm going to repaint the engine bay, and I'm thinking about tucking most of the wiring loom that runs in front of the battery back under the dash behind the firewall out of view.

Install some extra fuse protection in that loom while you are at it! smile
