Steve, I had a SIII LR with a V8 conversion that used to have a similar fault (after a lot more than 10 miles though). After going through all the electrics, a 50p fuel filter replacement fixed the fault...

I seem to remember this engine has a couple of vacuum hoses on it that can cause a misfire if split.

Sounds like an air leak to me.

my 1997 plus 8 3.9 did a similar thing last Sunday on a drive from South bucks to petworth. it was running quite rough after two miles on the M40 so I pulled off at J4 and went down the Marlow bypass so I could limp home if necessary. it did not get any worse so I went on and then I hit standstill traffic on M25 for 35 minutes. it never did stall or cough even so I proceeded and had no further problems. return journey no problems. the rough running does seem to kick in after a few miles (when you would think it has warmed up enough to run smoothly under normal circumstances) but then disappears - but it is disconcerting.

Re bad running on a 1983 4/4 (cvh engine)
Thanks very much for your kind advice and suggestions, after changing the distributer cap, rotor arm and ignition amplifier, it turned out to be the coil, now it drive like a dream, so I treated it to a new cam belt and tensioner, although I have only driven about 4000 mile in 4 years, It is prudent to change it. Has anyone changed the rocker switches for Lucas toggle switches?
If so how does one wire them up?

So it was the coil..Never one to say I told you so...but ..
I'm about to change my dash and rocker switches to Lucas type flip ones.. So I can update you on wiring them up soon!

A lot of the switches on CVH cars carried appreciable current, so unless you are going to install relay control circuits when you change the switches, make sure you buy quality switches that will cope with higher current.

Still trying to find time to get it running Richard. My Family think that the two days I get off a week belong to them  I have this thursday and friday off, hopefully will complete the rebuild.
