So the problem was a fuse that had blown. Removed from the car and checked with a meter it showed conductivity. In the fuse box with power applied it didn't. I had spare fuses, but because it appeared good, both visually and with a meter, I didn't swap it out. I am somewhat irritated with myself. But relieved it wasn't anything more expensive!

Don't beat yourself up Peter, it's all a learning curve and how on earth (pun intended) were you supposed to find that. Great work from Williams in finding it, not easy. Breathe easy and enjoy the bank holiday in your car.

Keith at BHM told me that because some fuses are marginal, they can develop hairline cracks, so test ok, but when heated up will fail, only to cool and start working. So probably a hairline crack that would pass a test current but not full voltage.

So probably a hairline crack that would pass a test current but not full voltage. That makes sense. The moral of the story is that if the logic says fuse "X" has blown, just change it.

The moral of the story is that if the logic says fuse "X" has blown, just change it. Yes but how do you know which one. I was polishing the horn button the other day and somehow managed to blow the fuse (that also effected other items, such as the radio). One by one I pulled all the fuses to check them one after the other and naturally it was the second last fuse of the whole bank that had blown.
