First drive (ride?) in a M3W today, thanks to Paul at Williams. The car was a 2012, unmodified other than the front dampers and is due to go into the factory for a full upgrade, although the chassis hasn’t actually cracked.

Impressions:

Ride: remarkably refined, it is comfortable enough and it went over the cattle grids easily and smoothly.

Steering: Yes, a bit crashy and it seemed to have a bit of a mind of its own, but I’ve driven worse cars. The lock isn't really acceptable either.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness: The engine and exhaust sound exactly what they should be, the “V twin shake” is subdued well. Anyone with Harley Davidson experience would say “stop whining”. Talking of whining the bevel box was occasionally noisy, especially on a trailing throttle, but it didn’t make any more noise than the differential in my 1960 ish Ford Prefect when I had it in 1971. But not acceptable today!

Power: more than enough, quite like the Roadster, but the engine needs to be revved, seems to come alive at 4000 rpm.

Fit and Finish: Seats are comfortable. The steering column needs lowering, especially as the removable wheel makes entry so easy. Not to provide a properly adjustable pedal box is unacceptable. The carpets are pointless: they sit between steel tubes and are easily pushed out of place. Waterproof rubber mats held firmly in place would make more sense. There were a number of areas where little details were just cheap, kit car like and not acceptable. For example there is a bolt in the cockpit, low down on the side and seems to hold the scuttle frame to the steel tube body. It is in full sight and can get wet. It is next to some welds in the steel frame. The bolt head, penny washer and welds were rusting. That, on a £30K vehicle is simply unacceptable. The bolts and washers should be stainless and the frame should be powder coated. What they do to finish details in the cabin is beyond cheap, it is insulting.

Conclusion: given this was a well used “Series 1” model I do wonder if some owners have had a rather unreasonable expectation of what the thing is. Eliminate the known S1 flaws and pay attention to fit and finish and then it would be a cracking little thing.

But as driven some of the MMC attention to detail…..to say that they have a long way to go is to put it kindly.

Would I buy one? Yes. But not until 2015 when I suspect it will be the car it always should have been.

Peter, it was lovely to bump into you this morning! My apologies for missing you when you left, too.

If you want to take mine out anytime, you are very welcome. You'll find a difference..

Currently having a drink overlooking the sunset in Bristol. Lovely..!

Thanks for the review, although my opinion varies from it oldgit
I am at a swansea camra beer festival so cannot explain why.
What do you mean by full upgrade? Will they affect the 2012 chassis during it?

Sounds good. As long as you pick your access points. You are going to hit in three places.

"Steering: Yes, a bit crashy and it seemed to have a bit of a mind of its own, but I’ve driven worse cars. The lock isn't really acceptable either."

Even with the so-called "Comfort Kit" it is problematic. Question on the 'lock'. are you talking about the lock to lock limitations or the steering wheel lock? The immobilizer?

"Noise, Vibration and Harshness: The engine and exhaust sound exactly what they should be, the “V twin shake” is subdued well. Anyone with Harley Davidson experience would say “stop whining”. Agreement here. It is a V-Twin. Physics rules here.

"Power: more than enough, quite like the Roadster, but the engine needs to be revved, seems to come alive at 4000 rpm."

Very much in agreement. 4000 rpm seems to be a sweet spot.

"Fit and Finish: Seats are comfortable."

A long trip will test that.

"The steering column needs lowering, especially as the removable wheel makes entry so easy."

Um, right. We all have different body shapes. We all wish to flog the designer of this car as he is of a slight build, not that tall and probably weighs what I use to in first year college! A seriously contentious issue.

"Not to provide a properly adjustable pedal box is unacceptable."

Totally agree! The left hand drive version of the 2012 model can't even be moved to the last position due to design issues. I get cramps!

"The carpets are pointless: they sit between steel tubes and are easily pushed out of place. Waterproof rubber mats held firmly in place would make more sense."

Mine came with rubber mats. They are worthless. Not attached to anything but hope.

"There were a number of areas where little details were just cheap, kit car like and not acceptable. There is more but wait!

I bought the 2012 model. Sight undriven. Don't care. For all of its flaws, and it has them, it has been and I hope will continue to be, a sheer pleasure to drive. I just came back from a 120 mile little jaunt and am so much better for it. I fired my therapist. As for the little nitnoy issues and complaints forming at the back of my mind, I only have to hear one little kid shouting "What's that?" followed by "Cool!" to be appeased.

You can wait for perfection until the end of time. No one guaranteed me tomorrow. This is what I have now. It will do quite nicely.

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Couldn't agree more with Michael H - I've had a 2012 for 18 months, 2 great summers and no real problems - still great fun.

Whatever the budget I can't think of anything I'd swap it for

Peter, it sounds from your comments, that the Three Wheeler is not the car for you and never will be.

£30K is just the base price. It is no trick at all to add another £5K to the cost for extras.

Unfortunately detail finish is where Morgan really lets itself down. Lack of stainless, or at least better plated, screws etc. in visible places, undersized screws that break or don't hold, protruding bolts, poorly selected leather in visible places, poorly fitting trim, water leaks and so on. Some of these things are just attention to detail and others would cost peanuts to fix.

One should not have to worry about rusty nuts and screws on a two year old car. It would be unacceptable on a motorbike so why should it be acceptable on an M3W. (Or, for that matter, on a Plus 4) One can only hope that things are improving.

I would tend to agree with your comment Jays. I would be concerned Peter that initially the fun of the vehicle would overcome any issues you might have or there may be with it. I am afraid this affects us all to some extent when the initial rush of excitement is there with a new car. Then with time reality bites and what was overlooked with I can compromise with this or that then turns into a niggle, then an irritating itch and finally a major issue requiring surgery. Think carefully Peter. cheers
