For a few days now, I've had a problem with the steering on my 1986 4/4.

The first few degrees of rotation in either direction are growing increasingly hard to turn, and then just beyond that, it suddenly frees up. The same thing happens when you come to wind off the lock to return to the straight ahead.

Strange thing is that on one leg of yesterday's journey, it was really hard to turn all the way home, then I parked up. When I restarted the journey an hour later, the stiffness had gone completely and the weight of the steering was consistent all the way through the rotation of the wheel.

Any ideas and should I stop driving it until I've located the source of the problem (but I may need to drive it to Mike Duncan's to get him to check it ?!)

thanks

Matthew

sounds simliar to a problem I had on my plus4, that turned out to be the universal joint on the steering column seizing up.

Yep - I think that's what it was - a day or so before posting the question, I put some grease on the joint entering the wing, but it was awkward to get to and didn't seem to make any difference. Then a couple of days later, it seemed to ease up and now I don't have the problem at all. I found an easier way to lubricate it is to use some motorcycle chain wax in a spray can - that way I can get the lube in easier.

I'll keep an eye on them.
