There's no dipstick, and the oil cap is welded on, so how can we check the oil level? I 'm leaking oil from near the head gasket.

Is this on a Three Wheeler? If so, the cap should not be welded, and should unscrew, when the oil level can be checked hot, immediately after turning off the engine. There is a thread about how to do it.

Dogmanjack, can you get your M3W to a nearby Morgan or Harley-Davison dealer to get then to check for you? Much better idea than using a spanner.

I should add that I'm stuck in a remote part of Wales where there is no access to such luxuries as spanners and electricity.
Also, I really meant to ask if most people had a nut on the oil cap as most diagrams suggest otherwise, but mine has.

The earlier versions have a nut on the top of the cap which holds a short dipstick underneath. The cap itself does unscrew but is often on quite tight - try a gloved hand or a rag to get a decent grip on the (hot) cap. Also you need to check the oil level with the engine reasonably hot and within a few minutes of switching it off or you can get a false low reading.

The Knurled cap is threaded - but can get tight ...as suggested try warm/hot with a cloth or glove on ..it should come off!!!
