How about the Mk1 Golf Gti? That car brought performance cars to the masses.

How about the Mk1 Golf Gti? That car brought performance cars to the masses. I owned a MK2 and I always resented the Golf when everyone referred to it as being the 'first' hot hatch. I always saw the Alfasud as having claim on that title (although it wasn't a hatch until later in its life-time), but perhaps the Vauxhall Chevette 2300 or Lotus Sunbeam have even more right to be considered 'first'. (note to self: need to check back at my old Autocar and Motor mags)

I had a Mark 2 GTI 16V and it was a great car, although I do think you're right Steve, there were hot hatches before the Golf. Even so, it has become an iconic motor... still, would we put it in the Top 10?

I had a Mk1 GTi and a 16v Mk2 but never really thought of them as hot, just warm - but I think that's probably because I never really got on with front wheel drive. As for earlier hot hatches, how about
