I had a 280SLK, last series with the pointy nose. V6, AMG suspension, clever roof, air scarf, heated seats, etc., etc.
It shared much in common with my BMW 320i X Drive M Sport. Which is why, after 2 years, it went.

The SLK is indeed a lovely car sir. But I need a 4 or 5 seater.
I'm sort of planning to have my cake and eat it too. I have more than half a mind to replace the Alfa with a Maserati Ghibli and keep the Morgan.
After various Morgan-like niggles with the Alfa I swore I would never buy another Fiat product, however I have been a Maserati fan for a long time and the 3 litre diesel Ghibli at about €65K looks very interesting. 275 CV, 8 speed auto and well equipped with a few extras if you find a pre-registered unit looks like a reasonable deal. For a touring car I have always prefered 4 doors.
I can console myself with the fact that whilst Maserati is still part of the Fiat group it is now under Ferrari management.

The Merc GLA AMG has much to recommend it, it compliments a Morgan perfectly imho

What's that replacing then J? Are you collecting from Essex?  Seriously I was having a close look at one on Wednesday's driving school, they kind of grow on you over a period of time. Is the boot much bigger than the Z3? My problem with the SLK is the lack of boot space when the lid is in the stowed position...

The answer is the SL... Much bigger boot and the folded roof lifts up when you open the boot. It is a suitable car for a Gentleman...

I'll bear that in mind Peter! Trouble is, I like simplicity, so the manual roof on my MX5 plus Z3 was ideal...

Interesting comments chaps and nice to have a virtual chat again Funnily enough we did start out by looking at an older Merc 350 SL (a lovely example that's still for sale at the Bristol M-B agents, silver with red leather interior, and 16k miles) but it was just too big, both for SWMBO to feel confident driving it and to fit in our rather small garage space. We also looked at Z4s, but the boot was even smaller than the SLK and it's also a larger car, again making it very tight fit in the garage for SWMBO. During the test drives phase I also tried a SLK350 with the V6 petrol motor, I didn't manage to get to 12mpg Asbo, I just mustn't have a heavy enough right foot  In truth, I/we expected the 350 to be the version of choice, but the 250 Cdi has just so much torque that it seemed effortless to drive by comparison. The twin Lanchester balance shafts keep things pretty smooth and the twin turbo set up means there is no apparent lag or sudden peak of torque. So, when combined with the lower running costs, the Cdi won the day. Nonetheless, you do have to watch the tail end on a damp or greasy surface. It's all too easy to break traction with 500Nm on tap at very low RPM
