I think the answer is a mechanical supercharger: this would up both power and torque without requiring the massive inter-cooler a turbo needs
Peter, I'm a big fan of supercharged cars (have owned three...) But :- - increasingly challenging on emissions regs for production cars (compared to turbochargers) are there any out there now bar the dual-charger VW 1.2 & 1.4 units? - irrespective of whether you are using a turbocharger or supercharger, it is far more efficient to use an intercooler to reduce the inlet charge temp (you cant buck PV = nRT so whatever means you use to squeeze a gas and it will get hot!) and a high inlet air temperature will not support the charge density/fuel dispersion that modern cylinder head designs require. This is why non-intercooled boosted engines died out as engine design advanced, though Lotus held out against the trend longer than most. As an aftermarket addition of course you can do what you want.

As the 2.0L GDI is really the Ford Ecoboost without the boost it is perfectly capable of being pushed towards 200bhp and 200 ft lbs, which is more than enough. Well.......yes and no. Air/water intercoolers are more compact and as efficient as air/air. Requirement for an intercooler is a function, mainly, of air compression and subsequent thermal rise regardless of whether the air is compressed by a super or turbo charger. So both benefit from the density increasing effect of an intercooler, though a turbo slightly more so because of exhaust gas heat transfer. However, most modern turbos are water-cooled by being plumbed into the engine cooling system anyway. The US-derived GDI crate engine used in the Plus 4 is not just an Ecoboost without the turbo. It runs different pistons with a higher compression ratio and different cam profiles. The c/r ratio would have to be reduced for turbo or supercharger use.
