When parking my 2009 Roadster, after a nice drive with my 16 yr old son, I noticed that water was leaking. Quickly traced it back to a leak at the top of the radiator where hose connects (left hand side). Tried to tighten the hose clamp to no avail.
Learned from dealer the plastic... fitting to which hose connects had cracked. Fixing will require complete new radiator. With the labor, this is going to be a costly repair.
Is this just a case of bad luck, bad material selection, "they all do that sir", other?

Kind regards,
BertR

Mine did. Different rad but had to have a re-core when the car was 6 years old.

Bert, you are not the first to experience such a failure...

"they all do that sir".
Quite all people around me have this problem.

Plastic or not plastic, due to vibrations, rigid hose and twisting between motor and radiator. It is a recurrent problem on Morgan.

The concern with "plastic radiator": they cannot be refurbished; aluminiun radiators are quite impossible to repair but stronger. Only former copper/brass radiator can be easily repaired.

You have to replace it by an aluminiun one. I don't know if traditionnal copper/brass radiator could be found for a Roadster.

You can get them made.VSM in Colwall made one for my +8 and it was a much better quality than the factory supplied one.

Last year, on my 2009 +4 the radiator cracked at the lower end. My dealer told me "They all do that" - I know, it does not help, but you are not alone. My dealer told me also, that the (plastic) replacement has been redesigned and is now considerably stronger. I will see in 2018 or 2019.

Best regards, Karl

Another reason to replace Aldermog?

2009, 25000 miles and the radiator is still firmly fixed and not cracked. But the hoses are both long and soft, so any movement between body and engine shouldn't matter.

More seriously, I wonder if silicone hoses would help, they are softer than standard hoses and a lot cheaper than replacing the radiator.

I had the same problem and changed mine to a Ali, one that is far better, they are a bit longer and keeps the engine cooler but cost about £600 but worth every penny, it only took me 30 mins, to change it and is very simple with the manufacturers instructions, I have all of the photo's when I changed mine last year on my 2009 Roadster and instructions, send me your e-mail and I will send it onto you

Regards

Andy

I had the exact same problem on my 2008 Roadster, changed to a mulfab ali radiator. Easy fit with instructions. £640.00.

Mulfab do Aluminium Replacements as this seems to be a problem.

Usually it is the Bottom Outlet which breaks off close to the body. - Vibration & Engine Movement as Graham said.
