Clearing out the far reaches of the garden shed I have come across a full 10-litre can of Diesel that I carried in the tintop before a holiday in northern Scotland in 2008. I need to get rid of it. I guess the local tip will have a method of disposal but, given that we were told a few years ago that Diesels can run on filtered chip fat, do you think it is safe to add, say, 2 litres at a time following each re-fuelling until it’s all gone? It would be mixed with the higher grade Diesel.

I would have a good smell first and re filter. The diesel bug in boats is well known. I had it one of my boats after a bad fill up before a winter. I lost 40 gallons and the cost of cleaning the system out , replacing parts of the fuel system was eye watering. I personally would junk it.

I personally would junk it. Yes, on reflection given the modest cost of junking 10 litres of Diesel it isn't worth the risk.

Why not advertise it for free on Gumtree? Someone with an old tractor may like it,they run on almost anything.

wouldnt think twice about using it. I have had a string of boats over the last 30 years and on three occasions and on boats new to me I have had the diesel bug. Easy to deal with and after decanting I used the previously bug infested diesel in my boats without problem. The bug lives at the interface between any water in the diesel and dead bug drop to the bottom. So is fou decant the diesel off the top of the container with just a bit of care, you wont have a problem. The fuel itself will work fine.

Old diesel can also be added to central heating oil.
You can blend about 25% central heating oil in your diesel, just don't get caught by the Excise Man....

Gas CH and log-burner, so no opportunity of using it in heating oil. Just got back from the tip where they were happy to accept it – as long as I donated it in the can! “Yes”, said the helpful young man, “we really should have a tank, but we haven’t – so you need to leave it in a sealed, non-leaking can.” Did the same with a couple of gallons of very old 4-star in an 8-gallon jerry can. That hurt as I had to donate a “W↑D 1952” ex-RAF heirloom. Still, I have another (empty) to partner my tool box inscribed “AMMUNITION - .303 Ball”. BTW, we continue to live and learn. I had never heard of the Diesel bug, but now I know.
