My wife and I are planning to walk Hadrian's Wall next summer. I did the Camino de Santiago this summer, My wife has never done long distance walking but is fit.

Any local advise on weather and/or walking conditions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

its a great walk - plenty of rugged scenery - quite bleak at times and certainly exposed to the elements if inclement

I've only done shortish stretches many years ago

just don't do what my mother did about 20 years ago - fell off a rampart and broke her ankle.

it took a long time to be rescued! frown2

Hello Joe. Was at the wall only last month with my 4/4. Great walking country and great driving country for that matter. Some of the terrain is difficult and it can be very bleak but if the weather is on your side it is magnificent. There are a number of very interesting roman forts to visit especially Housesteads and Vindalanda, and the roman army museum at Vindalanda is worth a visit. Some great b and bs in the area and good pubs. If you fancy staying in a castle try Langley Castle (part of the leading hotels of the world group) near Hexham. Anyway have a great time.

I live 20 mile away work out what you want to know ie B&B Pubs distance places to visit and I can send details onto you via e-mail . Just been up near it this a/noon .

PS. It can get bloody cold no matter what time of year so you will need a bit of luck .

Do you want to walk just the wall , or are you interested in a "classic" walk from coast to coast . There is a very well known route , originally written up by Wainwright, from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay . I think it is about 160 miles and generally takes about 8 to 10 days staying in B & B and Guest Houses en route.

There are several commercial companies who will arrange everything and carry your heavy luggage between stops, or you could do it self supported . Truly great country and well worth the effort.

One commercial company is http://www.mickledore.co.uk/walking-holi...4FUgxoCqqzw_wcB
But there are many others , I can't make a personal recommendation, but could make enquiries on your behalf if that is what you wish to do.

Reasonable fitness would be fine , but the weather can be wet , sometimes very wet, but not too cold unless you wish to do it in late autumn to early spring
