I thought I had read here, that someone was suggesting milling out parts of the S&S logo and putting mesh behind it, so that cold air could be introduced into the centre of the chamber, then allowed to exit around the edge with the spacer installed. If I didn't read it here, then, would that work?
There could be some shielding behind the hole, and water allowed to drain out through the gap at the bottom. It would, however, be a good idea to spray ACF50 metal protector over everything.
Well, if S&S are happy to allow a gap all the way around the edge, which, as I understand it is what they are now recommending, they can't be too worried about water getting in. The chamber has no oil or oilways in it, so that won't be a problem, and belts work fine in the wet, probably better, as they won't squeak as much!
Yes Paul, thats another idea from the Dab of Oppo R & D dept. Currently enjoying the sunshine in Costa del West Yorkshire. Might give the idea a whirl over the winter though.
I am considering combining Dabs front intake idea for cool air with Dan Lockwoods ally gasket with slots idea for exhaust for the hot air. Just need to sort out a few details , like a suitable grill behind the front intake.
The use of high ventilation around the cam belt is nothing new in the car industry. On my first Golf Diesel 1975, a little mouse slipped in onto the belt and got killed moving the belt a couple of teeth. Luckily the motor didnīt crash and I could limb out of the forest to a garage. Hard to find the reason for the problem though.
With regards damage to valves. It can't happen as in a non interference engine. The space that the valves occupy at any point in their travel is not shared with the space that the piston occupies at any point in its travel
Have a look at this. It is an S & S engined motor cycle I saw at classic LeMans this year. The cooling air intake is on the drive belt side of the engine but it's still a drive belt I suppose.
