http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyle...Wigan-dear.htmlI never thought I'd live to see the day when this occurred openly at this level of rugby - football yes, I'll never forget the image of a certain Gallic personage delivering a drop kick to an irate fan. Sport is about discipline for effectiveness not fits of pique IMHO.

Richard,
Lifetime ban: yes. Utterly unacceptable. On the street that would be attempted GBH and probably result Prison.

Peter
I found that sustained double hit the deciding factor.
We can all understand that knee jerk reaction "one of" strike, most of us have felt the urge I'm sure but restraining is what separates us from the thug is my feeling.
It will be very interesting to see how they deal with this in terms of presidence because the world is watching, Flower being a Welsh International.
As you say Peter one forgets that on the street he would be on bail now - it seems to have slipped his mind.

Hohaia "deserved" the first punch for elbowing Ben Flower in the face. The second punch was OTT, but a lifetime ban! IMHO a season ban would have been more than adequate.

Richard,
exactly: the double hit makes it pre-meditated assault.
One punch in a moment of anger, perhaps a 3 or 4 match ban as long as he was contrite. As Budster says, he was provoked.
But repeated punching a man down? No way. He has shown his true character and his inability to control his temper and it doesn't belong on any sports field, or anywhere else for that matter.

Yes sure he arguably deserved the first incidence and as I termed it the "one of" retaliatory strike which is understandable in the heat of battle and a common occurrence that any sensible ref will look the other way for unless the player is downed with the blow. There is a very real danger of brain damage when inflicting a head blow when the head is restrained, in other words when someone is down as all the exerted effort bounces the brain within the skull. There is no dissipation of the shock, let alone the obvious cowardice displayed during such an action and that is why I think it needs to be taken very seriously. This comes from an ex boxing and rugby playing perspective albeit at amateur level and quite a long time ago. Ali and Schuey are examples of this sort of action although Ali's would probably not have been a restrained head , just pure power from his opponents. It is thought that Schuey is very slowly coming back with incremental improvements as reported by his teenage son to a French reporter. The latest thinking on the inflicted injury is that the helmet mounted GoPro was the point of contact and skull penetration.

I've seen much worse than that at Kingsholm! It's a man's game, what's the problem?

Two wrongs dont make a right it disgusts me he should be ashamed of himself . I played on the wing for our village team it was a bit wild but you would have been sent away never to return . We see enough of this from drunken yobs in the streets .
