(a nurse as some of you know) was horrified by the second punch. A hit in the head, with force, with head flat on the ground is highly likely to result in brain injury (as well as the obvious black eye). Just because someone is talented, he should not escape due punishment. So : 1) Instant dismissal from Wigan; 2) Lifetime ban AND 3) Prosecution by the police for ABH - and jail if he has any previous. That MIGHT just convince youngsters that violence is not acceptable at ANY level of sport. Not sitting on the fence on this one [This echo's Richard's last post, which I have just read, but that is a medical professional's opinion too]

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyle...Wigan-dear.htmlI never thought I'd live to see the day when this occurred openly at this level of rugby - football yes, I'll never forget the image of a certain Gallic personage delivering a drop kick to an irate fan. Sport is about discipline for effectiveness not fits of pique IMHO. Well, whilst not condoning what happened I must say, and I speak as the father of a retired Rugby professional (Leicester Tigers and 7 caps for England U21), I have seen far worse. Throwing or receiving a punch is almost part of the game, I remember my son getting a rocket from Dean Richards for not being aggressive enough......at match fitness he was 6' 5" and 18 stone of second row!!! Compared to gouging and stamping it comes under the heading of a few matches ban in my book but when you think that some have had life bans overturned for drug abuse calling for a player to loose his career is a bit OTT I think, punish him for sure but lets keep things in perspective. My sons first senior match was against Northampton Saints and he got a very similar punch with the message 'welcome to the big boys son'....nothing happened, not even a sin bin, he 'sorted' it later in the match in his own way!

Could not agree more . While going for the ball I spotted our captain doing the same he dived for it I tried to dig my boot in to stop but to late he got kicked in the face . After the match sitting in a concrete bath of soapy carbolic water with a load of naked hairy arsed rugby players singing rude songs they grabbed me by the feet and pulled me under the water from one side to the other the concrete was rough as hell and my arse was sore for weeks from the scratches . But the laugh was when my mate said it was his birthday as we went up Newcastle high street ( pedestrian's only now ) . They all pounced on him stripped him bare and stuck him face first to the bus window the women shopper got an eye full that day. Thats what rugby is about that and a few ? after the match.

I've seen much worse than that at Kingsholm! It's a man's game, what's the problem? Though I live in Exeter now for the last 25 years and support the Chiefs; many happy Kingsholm memories with my Dad when I was young! Versus Ebbw Vale on a wet Wednesday night - I don't think the backs ever saw the ball.

Interesting that it seems Schumy's injury was made far worse by theGo-Pro mounted on his helmet.
Logical: it would have acted like a hammer...
Probably best to not fit camera's to helmets....shoulder mount as used by the Police makes more sense.

I should have added the bloke who thumped my lad was at that time Scotland's captain, a very experienced professional. After the match they (as all players do) had dinner together sitting alongside each other as if nothing had happened swapping banter......

That's maybe why they have done a little research or more likely been involved in compensation claims.
Maybe worth any bikers on here having a little think before using helmet mounted GoPro's.
We have a few Ski people on here - Adrian and Giles are I know.

Versus Ebbw Vale on a wet Wednesday night - I don't think the backs ever saw the ball. I remember seeing Mike Teague flooring a Bridgend flanker with a magnificent punch right in front of the ref and getting sent off. Nigel Starmer-Smith sanctimoniously proclaimed on Rugby Special the next day that "This is the unacceptable face of West Country rugby" They cut the tape just before Teaguey bowed to the main stand and received a standing ovation.

An interesting front line top level inside view SJ and how proud of him you must feel. My point really is that like so many things, just because they have traditionally been accepted or done that way is not a good enough reason to carry on that way. To me that is the best reason to change for the betterment of the game and protection of the players futures by minimizing the risk when it is based on research and knowledge. Unfortunately a lot of brain damage remains dormant until later in life and that is why these type of incidents need rigorous policing. It will improve the game, it's roughie toughie enough already but I do not need to witness this level of violence and cowardice whilst watching a good standard of rugby. A trip to Exeter or Plymouth at 0200ish would provide this sort of behaviour a plenty unfortunately.
