The Highland Park is a favourite visit for me, used to visit the Island enroute to Shetland on technical inspection visits to both sites every 6 months.

Luckily one of my colleagues home was on the quayside at Stromness and was a first in last out for a cuppa and a chat. His eldest Daughter used to run the visitor centre up at Highland so a non driving visit would be arranged and thoroughly enjoyed.

My No1 Daughter insists (resistance is futile) that I have an annual pilgrimage to the Whisky Shop in Lakeside to chose a couple of bottles of something really special and they are very generous with their sampling once they establish you as purchaser.

We tie the visit in with another family engagement normally, I tasted a Japanese sampler here once and it smelt like TCP but the taste was the best ever, I took a small medicine bottle of it as part of my gift and wished I had taken a bottle it was a stunner. When I return I'll get the name of it.

So many good malts and so little time and money.

Whisky!!

Not my favoured tipple, but each year a dealer in Wales used to give me a bottle of Penderyn Welsh Whisky . . .very pleasant.

As for malt Scotch; had a "sampling" session once whilst in Scotland. . . .oh dear! There was a Malt Whisky Shop in the hotel where we stayed who were very generous with the samples.
Breakfast the next day was a challenge.

Just to broaden the topic a little to the wine drinker...



The photo was taken last year outside one of the very many wine sellers in St Émilion.

I was studying the prices, with a Frenchman stood next to me doing the same. As he succinctly put it "At these prices, it's only for the Chinese tourists these days!"

Unfortunately, the processing of the photo via Photobucket has reduced the quality so the red (full purchase price) figures are not legible.

So just FYI... the legible prices in black are "hors tax" (i.e. add VAT at >20.6% in France)

Let's be right - Chateaux Margaux, Petrus, Mouton Rothschild have long been beyond the reach of ordinary folk. There are plenty of excellent wines available for more sensible prices if you know where to look - particularly if you're prepared to lay it down & be patient. For example, last night we drank a bottle of Lacoste Borie (Pauillac) 2005. It's the second wine of Ch. Grand Puy Lacoste, I bought a case of it about 5 years ago for less than 20 euros/bottle. It was fantastic.

I've never had the good fortune to taste Chateau Petrus, but Chateau Margaux and Chateau Mouton Rothschild I've sampled on a few occasions. In the early 90's when we lived down in the south west of France & I was going through a very tough time in business & struggling to pay the bills a very dear friend of mine gave us a bottle of Chateau Margaux 1966 (one of the finest Bordeaux vintages of the 20th Century). We drank it with Egg and chips. The best thing about that bottle of wine is the happy memory it gives us from what was a difficult chapter in our lives.

As to malt whisky.....I love it, but I'd never pay stupid prices for it.

I agree Giles, but then again there probably aren't many "ordinary folk" regularly shelling out £500+ for a bottle of single malt that started this thread either... are there?

We like Bordeaux wines and have made a few trips to the region in recent years, enjoying the sights, and sampling the food and wines. I know St Émilion is very touristy, but nonetheless it is a very pretty town, so we go back. We were introduced to a wine merchant there who specialises in what you might call "bin ends", a few cases of this or that from good local producers that are ready to drink. So you can get some very good deals on quality St. Émilions, Pomerols, etc. at more reasonable "ordinary folk" prices (20-40€ per bottle), and you don't need to lay it down.

We've also made regular forays up into the Médoc, the run back down from St. Estèphe, via Pauillac (passing by Chateau Lafite Rothschild of course!), through St. Julien and Margaux is a nice route. We do the classic tourist thing of stopping and tasting at various producers, making the odd purchase en route... though usually in something with greater carrying capacity than a Morgan Plus 4

One of my team mates when playing rugby had a father in law who was a blender for a distillery somewhere in Scotland.
He used to samples sent down in plain numbered small sample bottles.
We used to meet at his house on route to Cardiff for internationals for breakfast....
Liquid accompaniment too.
Some of the samples were absolutely stunning.
Many purely experimental with a range of tastes.
I am not a big whiskey drinker but do enjoy some tots.
Highland Park/ Chivas/Penderyn.
Penderyn do some nice ones theses days, one made due to a mistake in the maturing barrels used but kept as a going version. May be their Madeira version, and recently finished my bottle of it.

To lower the tone, I enjoy
LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK


And I buy my wine from the wine society, currently drinking Rioja

I drink what I like and as long as I can afford to do so will which as what il like does not have a big price tag might well be until I am boxed ready to go
