Hi chaps

Does anyone have any experience of the 1.9 conversion to the CVH engine ? There is a possibility I might have access to one, to replace my standard 1.6 in my 86 4/4.

I'm looking for more torque, but more power won't be a bad thing either.

Is it very thirsty/unreliable/temperamental etc ? Any special servicing requirements or other items that need to be thought about ?

thanks for your views as always !

Matthew

If you have a CVH the best replacement is a Carb'd 2.0 Zetec black-top.

The 1.9 CVH conversion is either done with a US spec block or a bored out 1.8... either way..... significantly not as good as the 2.0 Zetec conversion.

The 2.0 Zetec BTW,, is a direct swap.. same mounts and gearbox etc... all you need to do is junk the injection intake and strap on a couple of 40 or 45 DCOE's.

There is a outfit.. retro-ford (www.retro-ford.co.uk) who can supply all the parts required and an engine at a good price.

I understand that a few Morgans have been converted to 1900 CVH.

I do not have one but i have heard that it is best to ensure that 1900 is the USA inport Pinto engine.
The engine give considerable more torque and power than the 1600. As for thirsty reliablity etc I can not comment.

I had been looking at installing a 1900, and oddly discussed this at Castle Combe with one of the competitors only last saturday, where I was told that the Zetec angine was by far the better bet, so I am back to the drawing board.

what about.. the GM option that has been talked about here.. .190bhp and very quick... should of done the Carb and zetec when my engine was out.. likely cheap to do as a 2l zetec secondhand cannot cost much as there are plenty about.. so that sounds cheapest and easiest...

Infact any more info on that as i am tempted..

Yep.. and you can still get crate engines.

There is loads of info on the internet about this conversion... #

It's very popular with Classic Ford owners and also people updating CVH engined kit cars.

Classic Ford or Fast Ford usually have an article every few months on it...

I spoke to the chap at Retro-Ford who seemingly supplies all the components for the kit car guys.. ie.. he can tell you all you need to mount to Type 9 Gearbox etc... and it's all off the shelf.

this is worth a read

http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/CVH.htm

and this

http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/cvh.aspx

but I would go zetec or duratec if desprate to change your engine.

The cheapest and fastest route to a bit more torque would be get a "high torque" cam from piper or kent, (as CVH cams wear quickly anyway), a vernier cam pully and a decent exhaust system, go for a 4 into 2 into 1, NOT a 4 into 1.

Then take it to the rolling road and ask them to set it up for torque rather than peak power.

Thanks for all this information, chaps. I will wade through it all when considering what to do.

regards
