If I recall someone asked the instrument maker who claimed it was the heat from the light bulbs that is the problem. It raises the temperature of the air inside and moisture then condenses on the cold glass. Heated instrument glass would solve the problem crazy3

They said it does not occur with more modern instruments that use LEDs. I can't imagine why they have not changed to LEDs if that is the case.

Has anyone tried fitting LEDs instead of the bulbs?

Well good theory Peter, but mine does it without the lights on. I have on my 'new' dash layout a switch in the panel that allows me to turn the gauge lights on and off. Tried it both ways.

A few years back the wife of a classic Mercedes owner wrote an amusing piece in the local club magazine about what it was like being married to a Merc owner.

Among the traits described was driving endlessly round public car parks in search of a suitably secure parking spot, preferably against a wall or pillar, and always parking with the front facing out, so that the lights and Merc badge were less likely to be stolen.

The tip about parking with the instruments in the sun could go in the wives of Morgan owners list of what its being like married to a Morgan Owner.

But, in Oz at least, the sun is not good for the veneer dash!

The current Roadster 3.7´s + the Plus 4 GDI´s have LED instrument lighting as a standard. idea

But - guess what happens?! ranting banghead

So "ventilation" is the soultion (if there is any...)

It doesn´t matter how fast it becomes, but how it becomes fast. laugh2

My Roadster is far worse than the +4 or 4/4 I had.
Over winter I will look at solutions.

I have no solution as I can't say it bothers me too much as it's the Rev counter I'm interested in and that never steams up, just the oil pressure gauge does normally. I can fully understand if it does annoy you though.

My only observation based on ownership of three different models is : - If you store the car overnight with the roof up or the tonneau fully over this phenomena does not occur in the garage where my car calls home, so I find this no hardship as a remedy for a little irksome problem - typical Morgan ownership a little compromise.

Stored bereft of a cover is guaranteed misting in the winter.

The fuel, temp, pressure gauge on my 2013 4/4 mists regardless of the hood being up or down in the garage or a cover being used. Doesn't worry me too much.

Here's the reply I received back in 2011 from the manufacturer - Caerbont Automotive Instruments http://www.caigauge.com/ (no connection). May be helpful coffee

Quote:
Hi Nick

Misting in instruments is one of our bug bears with the older design instruments, several things have been tried over the years including sachets of silicon to absorb moisture , coatings that are applied to the inside of the glass and several other ideas, the base problem is that the gauge is not sealed and if it were it would have to be sealed with air of zero humidity inside, with air of the humidity that occurs this time of year inside when the gauge is activated through the movements and the illumination, heat is created, the air inside then condenses against the cooler walls of the instrument, either the case or the glass, because glass takes longer to heat than the case because of its thermal conductivity the problem usually exhibits itself there.
We have cured the problems over the years by using instrument movements that do not generate heat ie using stepper motors and LED illumination, the current 3 in 1 is of an older design, we are working on a design to change this and will take the design to Morgan shortly.

Hope this is of some comfort

Best regards
