After trawling the web I'm stumped so time to talk to the experts!
I have a 1990 plus 4 with a 2.0 m16 engine and I'm looking to change/upgrade the starter. Having removed the current unit it appears to be a Lucas m79 but the only applications I can find for this are for minis etc with smaller capacity engines.
Tried to buy a m16 starter online but the unit that came had bolt holes too far part. My holes are approx 105mm apart
Any clues or direction gratefully received. Is my m79 units right? If so what's the best hi torque replacement?

With a Morgan, normal does not always apply. The starter motor is dependant on the Bell housing, not the motor or the gearbox.
I had an issue with my 1988 CVH motor, and in the end I had to pick a second hand bell housing to suit both motor and gearbox and then i had the correct starter motor.

Would you not need to take the flywheel into account as well and the gear teeth on it, it could also be from a different manufacturer?

You lucky lad I was going through my files of stuff the other day and spotted this just picked it out on the top how's that for you . I have a 2L 4/4 and it gave me hell to start 3 starting motors in one week and non worked . You need to chat to George Appleby , Powerlite Moor Street , Brierly Hill, Dudley, West Midlands DY5 3SU. ( 01384-261984 ) www.powerlite-units.com He can build you one to suit your car and engine , I had given up it just refused to bloody start when it felt like it. He knows his stuff and is a formula 3 racing lad one very nice chap nothing is a problem to him EVEN ME . If I remember correct mine has a 3 speed starting motor it makes a low buzz and the engine is away . I put a new earth strap on the battery , a very thick one cost about £50/- and used the old one on the starting motor to chassis . Adrian, yes to your questions, I was directing my comment more at the bolt pattern for the starter motor. Different flywheels will define the length of the throw required, as well as the teeth numbers. As JTL comments, the combinations are large and if you cant match the numbers on the starter motor, you have issues.
A good contact as supplied by JTL should be able to tell you what you require in teeth and throw, from your old one, you then have to find one with the right hole pattern, thats the tricky bit.
