I'm thinking about fitting sidepipes on my 2002 S1. thinking
Should I go to the dealer so he can fit one or should I order an aftermarket system and let my mechanic handle it?

Wich exhaust system do you guys recommend? I have the standard exhaust now and it's a bit quiet.
I would love to have the sound the S3 owners have...

S1's are not an off the shelf fit as the wings are different... that said there are one or two rinning around.

hi spudgun. He you are retrofitting sidepipes then the only place to in is the factory. I've had it done to my s2. You will get a similar sound, but it could cost a bit extra he you want the sound of the gtn. The other option if all you are interested in is the sound is the factory or librands sports exhaust. Depending on your chassis serial number you get a twin or quad exit both sound great. See the exhaust sound thread to get some ideas.

Mr Tony, how long did it take the factory to fit your sidepipes?

About the Librands, do they swap the manifolds too or are they kept standard?

Are there Librand owners on this board who could chime in?
I need to drone out my girlfriends voice as soon as possible.

Thanks for the input! thumbs

The Librands exhaust does not swap the Cat or the Manifold.. although hi-performance versions of both are available.

Richard Thorne market a set of S1 Manifolds and a high-flow cat can be purchased from most performance aftermarket companies.

I have had 2 cars with Librands exhausts fitted... I fitted the first and the second car already had it fitted from when I got hold of it.

There are 2 variants of the Librands exhaust... 82-85ish db and 92-94ish db. There is a couple of hundred quid in the difference both are in the £1,200 - 1,500 region from memory.

The quieter one is more of a woofle where as the loud version can become quite barky... if my second Aero did not have a Librands then I would have personally gone for the louder one.. but then I know this is my personal view and is not necessarily shared by everyone...

Cerealsurfer, the Librands (the loud ones), don't they get annoying on the motorway? listening

the sidepipe job on the s2 is a simple job and was done in a day by the factory. The cost on a new car is i think £1500 and it was pretty much the same cost. It would probably cost more as cerial says as the parts are not off the shelf ones and it's not a standard job done on a daily basis. Best option is to ring the factory and ask.

I have the quieter Librands - lovely sound, really pretty loud when at revs, but very quiet, woofly and civilised around town and when burbling about. It's a really well-judged sports exhaust, and I'd have it again as it's not antisocially loud in built-up areas, but sounds brilliant when giving the car the beans out on the open road.

Motorway speeds in an Aero, it's not the exhaust that bothers you - drowned out by wind/tyre noise!

At the 2007 St. Tropez Club Aero event, there were a couple of Series I's with sidepipes fitted. The exhaust boxes were made by a Dutch company, I'm afraid I did not make a note of the name, but as you can see from the following photos they do look good.

The Norwegian guys who had then fitted to their cars said that they had got a local bodyshop to alter the bodywork and then just fitted the custom boxes to the cars. They looked very like a factory-fit job and I particularly liked the slashed sidepipes which looked very SLR-ish. flag
