I'm toying with the idea of grafting one of these on to the back end of the Kent engine in the 4/4.

Haven't you already got one?? I thought all 4/4s did. Part of the NA regulatory requirements I think . . .

Cheers,

It's the 2 stage supercharger on the back end of a Rolls Royce Merlin. This is actually the engine we borrowed from the BBMF when the Lancaster's # 4 engine had a hissy fit and the supercharger packed it in over in England this summer. This engine will be going back to the BBMF soon.

I'm thinking that, if Lettice Curtis had owned a Morgan, it would certainly have been supercharged.
Speaking of Merlin engines and women in the world of aviation, Beatrice Shilling would also have to have been one of the shining lights in this field. If anyone is not familiar with her, check out "Miss Shillings Orifice".

I have said before that a supercharged +4 GDI would be a stunning drive. Possibly not a 2 stage centrifugal type, as on a Merlin, a bit big and difficult to make.

But perhaps one of the new electric ones that are being developed as an alternative to turbos. The idea is they give 100% boost from idle...

Possibly need a small air to air inter-cooler to keep the air charge cool, but using the otherwise pointless A/C to chill the charge might do the trick in the space available.

Skim the head to get the compression ration up and run on 100 octane gasoline, easily available in the UK.....

All it needs is money and a spirit of adventure....

I bought a big V8 instead.

There is a little company in Salisbury, Burlen Fuel Systems.

Burlen

They own all rights to SU Carburetors (and most others) and make a good living restoring them and building new.

In the "shop" is a RR Merlin SU, a massive thing it is too. But talking to the former owner, John Burnett, he told me about the "Tilly Shilling".

Interestingly Burlen, then Burlen Services, were once Morgan dealers: you can see a painting of their showroom on the website. It is a funny old world.

Thanks for that Wingman I knew all about Beatrice Shilling as my late Father was a Polish Squadron Spitfire pilot - I hadn't heard about Lettice and have enjoyed reading about her life albeit in the obit pages of the Torygraph.
