I agree with you Dan about the ideal being a properly mapped ECU and perhaps these folks will get to look at that later on. But we must remember that the S&S VFI module in the M3W is predominantly Closed-Loop, which means it can adjust the fuelling to keep track with the pre-programmed 'goal' by increasing injector durations - admittedly within relatively narrow parameters - to keep good mixture control. I' hope that the increases in fuelling required to maintain safe AFR's for this type of kit should be within the capabilities of the factory ECU self-adjustment scope. But I am 100% certain that a 'mappable' S&S VFI unit is what we need next and of course those are readily available from S&S, complete with the required software. But I have heard from a couple of sources now that when fitted, these 'open' units don't allow the engine to even start, so clearly there is something technically clever built into the M3W setup to prevent a change from the 'locked' VFI module fitted by the factory. It can clearly be easily undone (witness the Mark Reeves factory 2.3 car, the Hesketh-24 and now the new Matchless V-Twin), but that bit is harder for the likes of us customers to work out for ourselves! Which is why we need some independent expertise from the likes of Garage56 to help us! I too think the pipes will look better with black heatshields, but in terms of length I'd guess from the pictures that the silencer section is about 4" or 5" longer overall, mostly at the front rather than the back. Perhaps looks drove the factory design rather than performance - and to a certain extent I can understand that - but these new options seem like a fair compromise to me. Scary info about those rear cylinder exhaust valve guides though - man they must get hot  I've found a picture of the black heatshields in place too...

Very interested too... I mainly understand the comments above running even leaner but I suppose the acid test is trying it out. Luckily subjective power and knocking are easily detected even by a twit like me!
Anyone think that slightly cooler running might also help engine drive-belt life?

Personally I am waiting for the Stage 1 upgrade kit from the factory. I believe there is a significant BHP gain due to the free flowing exhaust and it all complies with the MTWC sporting formula agreed for 2015.
It shouldn't be much longer before the factory launch the Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 tuning kits.

That is exactly how I imagined a straight through absorption silencer would look, I daresay it could be a little narrower, but at the expense of more noise. I understand that a longer and thinner silencer works better than a short fat one. There must be aftermarket ECUs available which would be suitable for the S&S, all it needs then is a rolling road with a single roller and man who understands V twins.

The Harleys are closed loop as well, but use narrow band O2 sensors, not wide band. The narrow band sensors do not allow enough variation to be read and then compensated for. The adjustment needed is just not there. I'm not sure what O2 sensors are used on the M3W. If they are wide band you "may" have enough adjustability to compensate, but my guess is it cannot cope with the major leaning taking place with the exhaust and air cleaner being of a more free breathing design. This is still early for M3W and the production numbers do not jump to a profitable market for "tuner" companies to address the issue. 3 or so years of M3W production and just over 1k cars versus a new Harley model with new style ECM and 30k bikes in 1 year. I know if I were a company doing this type of work I'd concentrate on the 30k and not the 1k potential customers. But we know someone is doing it for the factory team so it will eventually trickle down to the production cars, but not very quickly in my opinion. I too like the looks of the new pipes and again, these with the air cleaner will make a big improvement in your seat of the pants dyno, but with possible repercussions to the life of the motors.
