How often you change oil on the type 9 gearbox and the salisbury rear axle, I drive not more as 8.000km a year. Nothing to do with cost!

The question is why change so often, what really the people here do
A type 9 gearbox is fill up for live , if we change all 3 Year or 20.000km is it not ok

I prefer to change gearbox oil at 2 years, but an extra year won't make much difference. It doesn't have to be a rigorous time driven change.

There is no quantitive data at all to change your oil at two or three years old based on time in the box.

The only real worry is the additives coming out of solution but if the car is driven every summer that will not happen.

The oil blenders suggest a shelf life of 5 years for oil. There is no data been published to back this figure up just a good rule of thumb to quote when the question of how long will the oil last is asked.

With regards to mileage the quantative data suggest that the diff is worse for iron in parts per million followed by the gearbox.

From those used oil analysis of gearboxes I have read the ppm of iron is getting to 100 ppm after say 20,000 or 30,000 miles. I have seen diffs at 400 ppm by tht time.

I'm just about to get our Jeep, Impreza and MX5 gearbox oils analysied and it will be interesting to see tha results.

30,000 miles for a gearbox seems a good number to me at the moment to keep this near 100 ppm but to be honest I know of cars with 100,000 miles and no gearbox or diff oil change.

The only way to drain the type 9 gearbox is to remove the propshaft and either remove the box and tip it onto its tail or lean the car against a wall resting on its back bumper. There is much debate about oil for the type 9. We use a GL4/5 oil which seems to give a consistent gearchange and doesn't seem to fall out of the tail seal.

Or as I have done it with a gasoil pump,
I have heat the gear 1 hour with heating blower ,
then I introduce the suction tube in the side opening, and the oil is coming out!

I know of one Morgan owner who has cut a small hole in the top of the bulkhead to facilitate the business of getting a 6mm bore tube down into the gearbox. I have owned my 4/4 with Type 9 box for 15 years, and in that time I have changed the oil 4 times, the most recently being about 3 years ago when I had a new gearbox fitted. The first time I did it the condition of the oil was appalling, but the car had done 50k miles before I ever got to it. I suspect the oil hadn't ever been changed before.

It's on my list to do this summer (much easier when the ambient temperatures are high). I have used a manual pump in the past, this time I intend to use an electric pump of some description.
