Hi all.happy new year. Went for a spin in mog yesterday, around 70 miles with swmbo and with hood down. The temp gauge was reading circa 70 to 80c. I am wondering if this is a tad low. We had the heater on full bore so this may have reduced the engine running temp. Can't find info in handbook re engine temp for a 4/4.it is a new model this year. Any thoughts talk morganers

I would pay as much attention to the temperature gauge as I would the fuel gauge, it's an indication that 'something' is happening but not a lot more. I have owned 2 2008 +4's, virtually identical cars except one was a 4 seat. Both had highly inaccurate temperature, fuel and oil pressure gauges. The thing I pay attention to is if the readings change not what the readings actually are. I have checked with external gauges are they are way out for accuracy. When I bought my first Morgan back in 2001, a 1995 +4 the dealer said don't trust the gauges and I have seen nothing that convinces me to change that view. Even a cooking 'meat temperature' tester held against your top hose would be more accurate as a reading then you would know when your gauge says x the true reading is y and you have a datum point. Just make sure the thermostat is not stuck in the closed or open position and you will probably find it's perfectly normal.

My 2014 4/4 usually warms up to spot on 90 and then sticks there.
When warmed up the oil pressure registers at 4 when on the move.
But, unlike you, I have been a bit wimpish of late and been driving with hood up
- my excuse is that on dirty roads I find spray blows in and covers the interior in a layer of mucky water.
So the temperature difference could be explained by you having the hood down and heater full on.

Its strange that most tin tops these days have no gauges showing temperature or oil pressure, yet we jump into them and drive without any concerns. As soon as we have a gauge too look at we start worrying. As long as the fan comes in at the right temperature, usually around the 95c to 100c mark, then enjoy the car and just look for any dramatic changes in readings.

The temp gauge will show a lower value in cold weather and with the heater on full. Providing the heater continues to blow hot I wouldn't be at all concerned. The 3 in 1 gauge isn't great anyway, because the scales are short. Don't worry about it unless, as is mentioned above, there are sudden & drastic changes.

Thanks for all the replies folks. As usual all helpful and varied. My concern has been put to rest. I think the temp is probably running where it should be in this colder weather.p.s still yet to see another mog on the road since I got mine one September.cheers

Totally agree with Neil on this; but as a suggestion and from experience, it is worth carrying a spare relay for the cooling fan.
Not sure if your 4/4 has similar electrics to my 2003 Zetec, but on my car the relay for the fan motor and the fuel pump are the same specification, so useful to carry a spare.

Check the spare is good though..... I had an issue with a duff spare and caused me a real headache!

As a newbie I am still surprised that the traditional Morgan owner accepts all the shortcommings and failures on their rather expensive toys.

Your comment is well made and our willingness to put up with the shortcomings and eccentricities of our Morgans makes no logical sense.

The only explanation i can find is that our relationships with our Mogs are more like our relationships with a boat, or a woman. We put up, no we cherish them, because they make us happy.

Enough said, it isn't as Mr Spock said, Logical.
