Agree with Mr juggler.. Should be 20/50 in the dash pots. Even with worn jets and spindles you ought to be able to adjust the mixture to rich to at least prove a point. Make sure the needles are sitting correctly and Pistons are moving up and down cleanly and smoothly. Had one once where the owner hadn't tightened up the screws evenly and the piston was sticking.
A piece of hose can be used to get an approx equal 'suck' again at least close enough for testing. sU's are simple carbs really.

Well I just went OCD and took the carbs off for a throttle shaft replacement and to polish them up with again new seals/gaskets.
I do love how easy SUs are to work on, even though centering the jets can be a pain in the backside. The nut you turn to center the jet is the same one used to put pressure on the bottom cork gasket, so if you loosen it to help center the jet it might leak. Also I find that if I turn the mixture adjusting nut at the bottom sometimes it tries to rotate the jet as well.
