The AA want to increase my breakdown cover from £141pa to £246pa (no change in my requirements). I’m not having that . I’ve just had two very similar quotes – c.£100 – from Green Flag and Autonational Rescue, Cover is for two cars and all the usual stuff – roadside, relay, home, recovery; Europe to be covered as and when required. I’d be grateful for opinions/recommendations about the two I am considering, or any others worth looking at.

Try LV=Britannia Rescue tried and tested dual membership and covers you in any vehicle including recovery £105.00. I don't include homestart so a few extra pounds I expect.

Steve
The RAC and AA both try to maintain that they are "premium" services, and charge accordingly. In days gone by , things like route planners , hotel recommendations , maps etc were pretty useful but now we have so many other sources for them, that they really only fulfil the breakdown cover for most of us.
I went with the RAC originally as they would recover a vehicle from the track after a racing accident, which the AA would not. Mine covers me and my family (of 5) in any car that we are either driving , or happen to be a passenger in. I think my premium is approx £200.
Each year they threaten me with an increase to about £280 for no more cover, I promptly put my details into the AA website and obtain their quote (which is usually lower for a newbie as they want to lure you into their web) I go back to the RAC with this and they match it . It is really just a game now.
Good luck

I was insured with Headley Insurance and b/down cover was an optional extra (also covers Europe) with Morgan Rescue and Breakdown at about £30 per year. Fortunately never had to use them in about 50k miles of Morgan motoring

Don't accept the first quote - I did the same as Andy. I obtained a quote from the RAC and when I phoned the AA they matched the price.

I've used both Green a Flag & Autonational Fescue in the past for the tintops and always found the service to be very good and efficient. Never had to wait too long as they use local recovery companies. No connection - just been a happy customer.

My experience is the same as Andy G and Alan.
RAC quote for renewal with a huge increase. I ring and say it's too much, they reduce the price to a more reasonable figure. Happens in the same way every year...
If it wasn't that I get good cover (family incl 3 sons, personal so covers any vehicle even if one of us is only a passenger, includes Europe) at a figure that ends up being OK, I'd move because I find the whole process frustrating.

Change your breakdown cover every year - play one off against the other. These are commercial companies out to make a profit. They are not on your side. They put up the annual premium and rely on peoples' inertia not changing supplier.
What would you do if your usual garage suddenly doubled the price of its petrol?
Same with car insurance. I re-insured my Fiesta for £95.99 by shopping around.

Every year Tesco whams up the insurance cost. Every year I go back on the website and get it cheaper.
Swintons are the broker for our house insurance they had 2 quotes for me this year. #1 was the current insurer as a repeat customer #2 was the same insurer but re applying. You guessed it £50 difference.
