Happy new year to all you TMers (if its not to late now)
what I am looking for is information relating to the fitting of the Rutherford hoop rear suspension kit.
Is it obvious where it is fitted.(and before any wag out there tells me it goes at the back over the rear axle, I know that much)
Can it be fitted in the wrong place.
Are there any checks that should be made before drilling the chasis to accept the hoop mountings.
I recall hearing debates as to the correct position of the shockers i.e. as upright as possible or with a 10 to 15% slope towards the back.
Or is all this taken out of my hands by the location of the hoop.
Which is why I question if I can fit it in the wrong place.
I am sure that I read something similar on here in the past but I cant seem to find the thread now.
At the moment I have a rolling chassis without a body tub fitted due to rebuilding my 1970 4/4 two seater so at the moment there is nothing in the way of the hoop being installed. I have read the article on GoMog but its not really helping me. Any help is greatly appreciated any pictures would be great.

I have the same issue as I have one of David Rutherford's hoops to fit on my 1976 Plus 8 chassis.

The problem is that with a bare chassis you have no final reference points without the body fitted. My advice is to do what I have done which is to temporarily mount the hoop one bolt only each side until the body is fitted.

The hoop needs to be aligned so that dampers are in alignment with the top and bottom mountings. Sliding the hoop forward or backwards along the curve of the chassis will correct or make worse this alignment. However, this may not be the final position once the body is fitted. The rubber bushes are there to allow 'give' especially on the move when fast starts, bumps and all the other dymanic activities a suspension goes through takes place.

So my recommendation is this. Align the hoop in the estimated ideal position and drill only one hole each side and leave it at that. Once the body is fitted, it is then an easy job to realign the hoop to ensure it doesn't foul the body and is in alignment with it. Better to have to realign only two bolt holes rather than eight holes.

Remember that 'hand built' means that nothing fits first time and needs fettling!
