I'm with you on that Giles. To me there is nothing more satisfying than going to a pub with some beers I've never drunk before from breweries I haven't known about. I will always try the guest beers in preference to the standard regulars as I've often drunk most of the regulars and can always get them anytime. Guest beers from small breweries are what make pubs/bars unique in my opinion.

We have a Danish friend that lives on the small island of Bornholm. When he comes to visit he always brings some local products from Bornholm. The last time he came he brought some Svaneke Brown Ale and Svaneke Stout.

The Brown Ale is a very nice drop and the lable says it is 5% alc. Slow beer, whatever that may mean.

The Stout is simply excellent. It has a slightly lighter texture than Guinness and is, perhaps, a fraction more bitter. Unfortunately I don't have any left to do a direct comparison but I certainly enjoyed it.

I thought Newkie Brown was the slops left over from the real beers being brewed??? Certainly tasted like it!

We used to have 2 breweries in Llanelli.
Felinfoel - still there and going well on outskirts of the town.
Buckleys - larger and town centre but now completely gone.
They used caramel to make " Buckleys Brown" bottled beer.
My uncle used to buy the spent hops from there to feed to his cows.......nice milk!
As kids we used to walk into there to watch them brew and the coopery where barrels were made. Every Wednesday they blocked a road with trestles to run barrels from the transport bay back to the coopery.
Lovely smells in that are too...
Major Buckley, the boss, had a Jenson. My dad did a re spray for him after a lorry windscreen shattered and peppered his car.
Some Buckley family members now run a microbrewery.

The Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is ok, but the laughable thing is bottled ordinary Guinness used to be bottle matured, ie real ale in a bottle, but they went to keg beer in a bottle - adding CO2 just when bottle conditioned started to take off as a way of enjoying real ale at home.

You are too nice. Long ago all the decent traditional british beer companies were sold off to shysters like Interbrew to make in their chemical factories far away from their traditional roots. But one of the few good things G Brown did was to change beer taxes to favour small local breweries and since then we have had a real growth in microbreweries producing honest british beer made from natural ingredients. And my stomach has noticed the real improvement there has been.

Even more outrageous have you noticed the inmport of so called flavoured ciders from places like Scandinavia? Even into Somerset and Devon where small local farm cider and perry producers are suffering. Again the actions of the big corporate crooks.

There was only one thinkg to thank Watney's Red Barrel for - it gave birth to CAMRA and one thing for Gordon Brown, as you say, with the help to micro breweries.

Couldn't agree more.

This is a link to our local brewery, about 10 miles from where we live.. a bit bigger than a Micro, but still in a couple of industrial units on a trading estate and producers of Summer Lightning, a cracking brew...and several others!
