Hi Meabh, I'm not big on the development history of the Plus 8 so can only comment on mine. It's a '96 3.9 litre with EFI. I've had the car for coming up 7 years and love the torque and easy cruising, everything (apart from low speed manoeuvring) is so effortless. I've only had two problems with it, the first was a wire had chafed and shorted causing the ECU to keep pumping fuel, this was just before the Centenary event and BHM were totally snowed under so I got a local Land Rover dealer to sort it out. I convinced them that with a Rover engine, gear box and ECU it was a Rover with a "funny" body  The second problem could have happened to a lot of models, last year immediately before MOG14 (why do these things always happen at the worst times?), we were on holiday in the Lake District and it rained really heavily for a couple of days, water got through the louvres/under the bonnet and found its way into the ECU and it wouldn't run, I was able to dry it out with a hairdryer and it's been fine since. I (hope) I've now sealed the bulkhead where the harness passes through, drilled some drainage holes in the bottom of the ECU housing, treated it with ACF-50 and bought a storm cover, so hopefully that problem won't happen again. Other than those I've never regretted going for the Plus 8.

Like every Morgan owner you will hear from, I think that mine is ideal!
It's a 1987 +8 so has the flapper (analogue) EFI, maybe not as tuneable as the later cars but a multimeter will enable most things to be diagnosed. Having said that I've never had any reliability problems over about 5 years and lots of miles including several drives to Europe.
It's fairly economical, performs well enough for me although the one criticism is that 1987 was in the short period when +8s had a single exhaust. Thought of swopping over to twin exhausts but have decided to leave it as it is. Still I've got two fuel fillers!
Just been out in it for the first time since November, started easily, ran well, big smile..... Hi Malcolm, I think they may have had more than one period of single exhaust because mine has one and its a '96. I too have thought about converting to twin but over two grand to add a few extra horse power and make it even noisier doesn't seem a priority right now. It does surprise me how many Morgan owners question whether it's really a Plus 8 because it's only got the one pipe.

Well thanks to all of you. I did speak to RPI who said that they could easily put an eight into my 89 Plus Four and have done one already. To sure that is tempting because I have upgraded everything else and an engine change is a way forward.
Anyway at the risk of boring everyone else we'll stop now and I will say thanks again to everyone who answered. By the way John, the roadster IS a possibility but I do like my car.

I struggled on the +4 and nearly went the engine route.
Good luck if you do it.
In the end I decided a newer car was a better route for me but parting with the +4 was hard

John, I think Paul Clarke did the v6 swap into his 4/4.

Hi Meabh, I have a 1993 Plus 8. It has been re-chipped by previous owner. No problem with engine or gearbox. I rebuilt the front suspension myself and fitted the Mulfab steering bearings. Also fitted a Panhard rod. Drives excellent. Love it.

My 1992 pre-cat 3.9 Plus 8 is a great fun drive, with a soundtrack to match (full stainless twin exhaust). With roll-bar and aero-screens it really looks the part too.
For me the one drawback is that it does not have the stainless inner wings and bulkhead.
