I took early retirement at age 57 - best thing I've done! I don't know how I ever found the time to work.

I took early retirement at age 57 - best thing I've done! I don't know how I ever found the time to work. +1 me too. One year on and never regretted it once. Keeping in touch and having time for your ex work colleagues is an added bonus. Not had any communication with any of mine in 12 months, but that's probably more a reflection of where I worked! ~iw

I have seen several collegues who planned their retirement and very sadly didn't make it. My opinion is, if you can afford it, retire as early as you can and make the most of it. From experience, as you get older, the body plays up, things become more difficult to do and if you are very unlucky, health concerns limits ones options.
Life is short, its not a rehearsal, make the most of it. There is a an increasing list of friends, colleagues and a cousin who have either ended up with disabling illnesses or have been boxed and ready to go. Once I divorced my now ex and got accommodation sorted was / is determined to make the most of my gains from corporate servitude. Mog back with me May / June time, currently negotiating on a 34 ft yacht..... planning a trip to Tuscany in September in the mog, sail around UK next year more ideas in the pipeline. Thinking about getting a dog but....I wish I had taken the package earlier but now on track for a few years of FUN before I start dribbling out the side of my mouth and by then I will not care.... We all only have so many heart beats allocated....so when you can go for it Pete

Yup - retirement is great - don`t know why I didn`t do it 40 years ago.
Only downside is that you don`t get holidays.

Left work at 45. Always wanted to paint and carve so spent some years doing that selling through a couple of galleries and helped a mate out with some design work and race car restoration until I could draw my company pension at 50. Never looked back. Never had a day where I wondered what I was going to do with myself.
And then last year joined Morgan as a tour guide and would now miss all the banter, meeting people and a more structured life.

Peter am 67 now and deciding whether to give it another year like you enjoy my job ! The boss would not appreciate me buying a M3W ! Not when I get a +4 in May!

67 as well and doing part-time work. I love the job and could manage without the money but it comes in handy for things like +8s and log-burning stoves!
