can u charge it without having to plug it in to a usb port ?
I'd guess that you could use one of these: -
Griffin PowerJolt It fits into a standard lighter socket and allows you to use any USB cable to charge devices such as iPods, iPhones or Blackberrys. As it powers standard USB devices, I don't see why it wouldn't work on this; however, until someone actually tries it out
The other thread describing this device says it has its own power cable:

It also charges of a USB port on a PC.
You update via software you download.
To answer other questions:-
1. I guess it will work with the top up, but haven't tried it as I usually drive top down. But it works in my c class estate & is designed for tin tops so I guess it would.
2. Because it emits a loud noise & flashing lights I notice it more easily than my sat nav.
