I did it again: Couldn´t resist to buy something with wheels made in the UK.

Daughter needs (that is: wants) a horse trailer to get her four-legged friend to and from events. After some consideration we have chosen an Ifor Williams HB511. Build quality and the clean design are quite outstanding compared to other makes. I wonder how the trailer behaves in real life.

Any experience here?

Andy

They must be good Andreas, they are the most stolen trailers in the UK.

Ifor Willliams trailers are extremely good. Hope the horse appreciates it!

Sad, isn't it?

At the yard where Caroline keeps her horse all the trailers are wheel clamped or have the wheels removed, to make things a bit harder. They are also parked out of sight of the road and now there is CCTV and floodlights on the entrance gate area so if anyone actually comes into the yard outside normal hours it is recorded.

So far, so good.

I have no experience with the HB511, but I have two Ifor Williams trailers and they are fantastic bits of kit. Do keep a very good eye on security, though. One of our trailers, a 10' x 5' dropside job, was stolen by people who cut the hinges off a gate, drove across two fields, and smashed the wheel lock and the hitch lock off the trailer.

Fortunately it was insured with NFU, who are brilliant, and we had a replacement within a week or so.

Couldn't agree more Peter
My son has bought a (used) horse trailer to transport our grand-daughter's pony and miniature donkey to events. He keeps it on the drive at home as it's more visible than in the field. He is acutely aware of the scum who can't keep their hands off other peoples property having had several rare Japanese Bantam chickens stolen recently from a locked pen. It seems no amount of security will deter the determined thief.

My friends in the Wyoming USA point out that a semi automatic shotgun usually works as a deterent. They lock nothing, truck is left with keys in the ignition. But in Wyoming if a person comes onto your property intending to comitt a crime you are entitled to use "reasonable force" to protect your property. The definition of "reasonable force" includes shooting someone dead.

A different world and not one I'd care to live in.

Using "reasonable force' over here is more likely to get the property owner into trouble rather than the thief!
