I thought that Brunel's broad gauge also allowed more headroom... How much extra height is needed for the wires over the standard loading gauge?
Peter - they are having to demolish and replace or raise the deck of more than 100 bridges at huge expense. Most of these it is not necessary - if out in open countryside we will not be stopping trains underneath so a gap in the contact wire could be an alternative (as long as a technical issue with pantograph contact could be sorted) but it's public money so no ones really bothered. Graham -yep I'll certainly miss the 2250hp at full chat. Might have to tape the sound and play back during each transit ! Cheers

And they're having to dig DOWN through Sydney Gardens tunnels in Bath due to the World Heritage status of the stones !

What about the Severn Tunnel....a bit longer than Box and notoriously wet. Copper wires overhead don't like water as Eurotunel has found out and that is with a modern tunnel that is essentially dry.

When Portillo was in the Severn Tunnel they lifted a manhole cover and there was a raging torrent under the track. If I remember that correctly.

If I remember that correctly. **** Anorak alert **** Anorak alert ! 13 MILLION GALLONS of water pour through the Severn Tunnel every DAY ! If Sudbrook pumping station breaks down we have 3 mins to get out or we're all goners !! Yes NetRail bosses have confirmed to me that Severn Tunnel will be "challenging" not only due to water but also dilute sulphuric acid (diesel exhaust plus water vapour) which wears the rails out in 7 years rather than the standard 25 years. However the Severn is a problem for 2016 or 17. Will also be chaos when work commences.
