I have a 1987 Merc 560 SEC that does very low mileage, especially now that I have a 4/4 (yes, I know there could not be 2 more different cars).
I finally got off my backside to replace the Merc's 14 year old tyres, in part provoked by the discussion on here about old tyres. I was seduced by the price of Kumhos to replace the Michelins.
I have a very steep driveway and the now Kumho shod car could barely make it up without huge amounts of wheel spin. This is a car that when it gets out I like to drive with some spirit.
So now I have zero confidence in the new Tyres. But what reasonably priced Tyres could I replace them with, assuming the global economy means a level playing field of supply and price?
Answers on a postcard.......
[oh and I do know that the word Tyres is not a proper noun - please tell Apple!!]

Probably because Apple would like to spell tyre with an 'i'!
Try Vredesteins. '87 would come into 'classic' as far as tyre sizing goes now i.e. not so low profile they look like rubber bands!

I just got 4 x Dunlop Sport BluResponse 195/60R 15 H from my local shop 55 pound each.
This was cheaper then on line, but not much help in Sydney.

Wash down the tyres with soapy water to help remove the moulding release compound.
It's a sort of silicone compound which is slippy.

All new tyres need to be driven around 100 miles to wear off the silicon, most tyre manufacturers will warn you of this " running in period ".

I agree with Burgundymog and Milligoon, get some miles on them! A couple of my friends use them for competition and swear by them, both top runners. If you still have problems I'd suggest you contact Kumho Australia and seek their advice/opinion.

Thanks for the tip about the silicon. I must have left most of it on my driveway!

My local tyre dealer rallies classic cars and swears by Kumhos. But a 5.6 litre RWD Merc is just made for wheelspin, isn't it?

I have run Kumho tires on my BMW for the last 6 summers and other than wearing faster than I would like, they have been rather solid summer sport tires.
