Wouldn't it be easier to put some stand-offs onto the existing mounting bolts to move the speaker away from the wood mounting?

If you cut a new pair of plywood oval rings, screw the new speakers to them, and then mount this to the existing wood with some spacers you'll not have to change the car, and the only difference will be that the speaker cones are a few mm further back from the grilles. if you were concerned about leakage around the gap, you could add a simple shroud to block it off.

BUT the existing ring is too small to do as you suggest, you can see in the last but one photo how narrow it is. So a new wooden plate needs to be glued to the back of the bulkhead and then I can screw a new speaker mounting oval ring to the new plate.

Once the speaker chassis is properly mounted to the ring and sealed air will not be able to leak directly round the speaker. The rear void is big enough ro act as a ported enclosure. It isn't exactly HiFi....

I know it wouldn't be too long before you this car in lots of pieces on the garage floor!

Part 2

Removing the panel between the cabin and the fuel tank wasn’t so difficult: the computer box had 4 nuts holding it in place and the metal can could be sprung out of its mount.

With the panel on the workbench I could see in more detail what needed to be done. First this elliptical bit of ply had to be removed.



With a bit of persuasion it came away, leaving the 4 captive bolts in place. I then made a new mounting plate from MDF, edged with strip to hold the speaker baffle away from the mounting plate.



I had to cut the captive bolts down by 4mm as otherwise they would get in the way of the new speaker mnting bolts holding the speaker to the new rear pannel. This shows the speaker was correctly mounted from the inside.



And then the two parts assembled!



Repeat for the other side.

With the speakers now mounted and the rear pane re-fixed, this time with the correct number of screws, I could start to clean up the inside. This is the result.



OK, it wasn't really necessary to detail this area as no one can ever see it, but I know it is now as it should be! Compare with the photo in the first part of this story.

So, what do the new speakers sound like? A big improvement: much more bass, no distortion even if turned up enough to hear the radio at 60 mph. I’m pleased!

Peter , I wonder wether you should take this up with the Morgan top brass as the quality control here leaves a lot to be desired in such a desirable Mog as yours is. They should be ashamed of themselves .

There have been many posts here about quality control and attention to detail at the "Factory". They know that they need to do better and have made progress: the general level of fit and finish on our 2014 Plus 8 is way ahead of the 2009 Roadster.

BUT it seems that car audio is something that no one at the factory really understands. They can't get DAB radios to work, yet the answer cost me £30.00. I suspect that they don't believe car audio is very high up owners priority lists. For Traditional Morgans I think they are right but for the Aero based cars, especially the new Aero 8 with its beautiful hard top they need to up their game. It is pointless providing a tablet based system if the rest of the audio installation isn't good enough.

When we were young and we talked of upgrades it was a new gear knob,map reading light,or an asrali steering wheel,if you were very lucky webbers wide wheeels and an exhaust.How times change now its speakers the latest gps or camera thingys,who had the best fun.
