Not so good by wet weather. It would be better a hole on the bottom for evacuate oil And dust.

Q8Morgan & Atalante83, My thougts where that I want to get the wind pressure in, which is from the front and the pressure sideward out by the 2mm gap I got trough washers between the CamBelt cover and the engine. I also did not want to do to much damage to the cover, therefore I drilled 2,5 mm holes in the more discreet place which is around the S&S logo. Right about debrits and rain!...That is the idea for the second grid cover in front of the first one. The holes are lightly smaller and between both grids is a little space where in 'just in case' I can put some kind of blocking stuff to avoid dust or rain. The 2 screws holding the second grid are M3 which are invisibly fileted in the 2,5mm holes. I also wanted by removing the second grid that there is no trace left (pic.1)
Cheers, Georges

A very neat job. I really don't think that dust and rain are as much of a problem as has been envisaged, and if it is, then a shield of some sort on the inside will help, whilst still allowing air in. After all, what damage can water and dust do, that isn't already done on the rear drive belt. It seems heat is the real enemy here?
By the way, what is a 'trough' washer and why use it instead of a plain flat washer?

Thanks Paul, I think that debrits have to pass two grids and water will evaporate quickly due to the heat still envolved in the CamBelt chamber...only time will tell if my CamBelt holds up longer...I will post some updates if any changes or issues will ocure due to my mod. ...'trough' washer seems to be my bad English I use a normal 2mm brass washer...

My mechanic opined that he had seen many belt failures like this and had come to the conclusion that they appeared to be happening at the same place, i.e. the part of the belt that stopped at either the cam gear or the main shaft. All engines usually stop at the same place, 4's, 6's, 8's and twins. Where the belt stopped on the gears that had the most heat was where the failures occurred. All at once, instead of spinning around and staying at a mean temperature the belt stopped on a piece that was still radiating heat and causing damage in that one spot. Blistering and other signs were in evidence at the point of breakage.
I will go out on a ledge here and add that having the case opened with just the washers will help this as the heat will, by convection alone, be allowed to escape instead of building up in a space with no where to go. All this in an engine that is stopped.
My 2 cents
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

It look a neat job but was there no space to fit your secondary mesh inside the cover so the S&S logo is still visible?

Hi Tim, I just didn't want to fit something inside the Cam chamber to avoid a mess to happen...beside I don't really care about the S&S logo...but you can do so, just be carefull about the space between cover and belt inside
