BMW Oilhead boxer motorbike engines are interesting from a running in point of view. Owners who treat them gently whilst running in, find that they generally consume oil until at least 15,000 miles as the cylinder bores have glazed over. The advice given to me by my dealer was to run them in to 500 miles without slogging at low revs then start revving through the range to max and no use of fully synthetic oil until the first annual service. Following that advice, none of my bikes used oil. My Audi TT, bought used with a lady first owner, drank oil. Probably treated the engine far too gently! Interesting.... I've heard about the glazing of cylinder bores before. I had an Aston Vanquish from new and, from memory, the ECU actually prevented harsh acceleration and set an automatic rev limit for the first few hundred miles. All programmed in by the factory.

I too know a man who rebuilds motorcycle engines and says the best engines were thrashed when brand new. He says it machines all the parts beautifully and the engines last much longer. My 4/4 came with instructions that the oil did not need changing till 10T miles. At 4T the oil looked awful to me so I changed it. Nick

Following that advice, none of my bikes used oil. Exactly the same with the Triumph bikes I had... The only part of a modern engine that needs any "post assembly" running in are the piston rings. If not properly honed in the car will use oil....

Thanks for the replies, so to summarise:
1) Don't let the car labour.
2) Don't change down too much to overtake.
3) Try not to go over 4k revs too often.
4) Keep below 75 mph and motorway to a minimum until 1,000k or so.
5) Don't treat it with kid gloves.
6) Change the oil/filter at the 3 month/1k service
7) Get out and enjoy it!

I was told by the dealer to keep it below 4000 revs for the first 500 miles and then gradually increase the revs with occasional visits to the red line being perfectly ok after that until 1000 miles when it has its first service. After that go for it. Mine has done about 3000 miles and is sweet as a nut with regular use to 6000 revs plus, the red warning light comes on about 6500 revs and the fuel cuts out at 6800, only done that once. Whilst the car is lovely to drive at less than 4000 revs you will be much more impressed above that where the power kicks in, keeping it between 4000 and 6500 revs on twisty country roads is serious fun.

Modern engines and oils negate the need to run in and while I would not give the car grief in the first 1,000 I would look to give it an Italian service after that! Just my opinion.
To reiterate what Jay said you should not run a new engine on synthetic oil.
