Yesterday I took delivery of my 43 year old 4/4 from Lifes in Southport. I spent 90 mins with them going over the car, chatting to other owners and learning how to fit the hood and tonneau. Morgan dealers are as different from other dealers as Morgan's are from other cars. A great experience.
On my way home I learned my first invaluable lesson of Morgan ownership. When the fuel gauge shows Full, in might not be, and when it shows quarter full it's close to empty. We ran out on the M40 and spent 4 increasingly cold hours onn the verge, behind a barrier waiting for assistance. By the time it came the driver wasn't interested in looking at the car (it was pitch dark by then) so the car was winched into the back and we were driven the rest of the way home. 5 litres of fuel in the tank a couple (or three) turns on the starter, a cough, a splutter and all is well with the world again. Off to Sainsburys to fill up, and could only squeeze 44 litres in - I had read that the 4/4 had a 55 litre tank. Back home I read in the owners manual that it has a 10 gallon (44 litre) tank. The only question now is what mpg (or l/100km) will I get? A few careful readings over the next few weeks should provide an accurate answer for my car, so that I know how far I can go between fills. For now, I'll err on the side of caution.
Spending this evening going through the paperwork I got with the car. It seems to have only done c. 1000 miles per annum for the last 6 years. My aim is to increase that over the coming months.

There's a chap called Dan who runs a company called Winchester Classics near Meon. He has worked on racing Morgans and is an excellent man to contact for servicing.
I've no connection apart from having used his services once or twice?

Welcome to Morgan ownership, sorry to hear of the petrol debacle, easily done. I'm sure you will have many happy motoring miles to come. I was originally from the Alton area and you have some lovely drives near you, especially if you keep of the main roads. A trip from Petersfield to East Tisted via the pub with no name (White Horse) would be a nice one.

Mark, you would be wise to carry length of bamboo to dip the tank until you get to now the gauge.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Welcome to TM Mark. Sorry to hear of your adventure.
The fuel gauge reading appears to have always been a work of fiction.
When the gauge on my 1 year old 4/4 shows half full it needs 36l adding to fill it.
I soon learnt that the car seems to take a an age to get down to showing half full, then it goes to empty very quickly.
Most of us just get a feel for how many miles we can get away with between fill ups and then we can ignore the gauge.
Enjoy the car, we're looking forward to seeing you out and about.
