Or perhaps with Paul being a motorcyclist, they could smash the two formats together and create the great british bike off.

Top Gear made Hammond - read his autobiography if you haven't already - so I would hope that he would show some loyalty.

I hope he stays with TG and yes - Paul Hollywood was great with Surtees and might be a suitable choice.

I agree.

I do know JC, not terribly well, but I do know him. He's a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. The producers and all the hangers-on should have made a hot meal available to them after so many hours in front of the camera (which is high stress) and having promised that there would be a meal awaiting them. It's really not difficult to arrange.

Having said that.... wallop someone = instant dismissal. It's so not the answer and he was a massive prat behaving like that. Totally unforgivable.

It could have been handled under a suspension, apology and fines - but I don't think the BBC had much choice. I would terminate anyone in my employment for doing the same unless there were some extraordinary circumstances (didn't throw the first punch maybe, or some horrid private matter).

First I believe Clarkson was wrong and he did cross the line. However, I do not agree that dismissal was the only option. His contract, coincidentally, was up for renewal and, therefore, so was his salary. The BBC could have hit him in his pocket (say 20% reduction of current seven figure salary)- take it or leave it. Thereby potentially getting JC to take the hit or sacking himself. At least this option would have given JC to demonstrate his contrition without depriving his fan base of the show and the BBC £60m in revenue. Just saying there was an other option.

He wasn't exactly dismissed. The BBC is just not renewing his contract.
