Having picked up his 6 month old Mercedes A45 AMG.
My son-in law started on his journey back to North Wales on the M5.
He was cruising at 75 in the middle lane.he does lane discipline.
A silver grey BMW came steaming up behind him then pulled alongside . he thought he wanted to race!
Son -in -law didn't react only when the BMW pulled in front and put his follow me light on!!
Took him off motorway.
The Merc had been cloned!
My Son knew where the chassis number was all correct.
The police recommended he put a sticker in his back window to prove the speed pictures are wrong!
I told him to inform DVLA they will issue a new plate.
Wonder if this is the start with no tax discs needed?

Tax discs made no difference to cloning.

An in car camera with GPS, daily down loaded will prove where you have been at any time or a Garmin SatNav with breadcrumb facility and at what speed.

The cloned car must have been used in a crime, as the police stop you son in law. And would not have know this at the time of stopping the car.

Certainly nothing to do with the new system except possibly that because of the new system and the cameras linked to the DVLA, he is much more likely to be stopped

Pal of mine has been cloned three times, in one case by them unscrewing and taking his number plates when parked. All before the new system came along.

The plod advice is sound and does re-inforce the point about cameras


Inside lane?

Surely this is a problem that it is too easy to get plates. If stamped plates were only issued by the DVLA, as in most countries, surely cloning would be more difficult, not impossible, but not so easy.

In theory you can't get plates made without showing the V5A, but in reality anyone can order "show Plates" over the internet....they are made in Ireland and mailed over.

After spending the weekend in North Wales and a couple of trips to Manchester.
Tonight he was boxed in by 3 police cars on the M6 Birmingham!
Had to show his licence and go to the police station this time!
He will have to inform DVLA for a new plate.

Ha! they love the practice..

On a serious note, clearly the PNC marker is a serious one as they are ranked in order of priority & I'm guessing that he wouldn't attract that much attention for an expired tax disc!!

A paperwork trail copy kept with him whilst driving would be my advice, with all correspondence to DVLA sent with proof etc.

The Police are quite legally acting upon information available to them, but they are acting wrongfully if it can be proved that this information is false or out of date.

The first time the Police investigated his use they had a statutory duty to inform DVLA of the current user/owner. There will always be a time lag but after a reasonable period plus his own protestations to DVLA, the record should be amended.

If this continues, I would seriously advise he seeks recompense for harassment and/or wrongful arrest. Sadly, he's not the only one this happens to due to DVLA being a separate entity..

The wonders of ANPR ! It would appear that the clone vehicle has been hitting speed cameras and the number has been put on the ANPR system. Hopefully they will stop the right vehicle, that is unless it has already changed its plates again.

I do hope it's not a cherished number and he has to change it.
