A timely reminder for anyone contemplating a touring holiday in the Swiss Alps, if you like touring and admiring the scenery which can be quite nice in places, be prepared to have your rear view mirror full of boy racer in the company car unless you are travelling at or above the speed limits. They are, but there are a lot of mountain roads used as race tracks, and if you get a speeding ticket unless you are stupidly over the limit all you will get is a fine through the post, pay it and it is not logged against you anywhere, a good earner but no real deterrent, and you keep your licence.

There were rumors that Swiss police could even confiscate your car because of speeding. Standard speed limit = 80kmh on country roads! Highway = 120kmh.
Fines start from 40CHF (1-5 kmh above the limit) and raise fast to CHF 180 or CHF 260 when 15-20kmh above the limit.
As a foreigner I would not mess too much with their system. cop

Confiscation happens in France as well, as Bentley Continental driver found out en route to last years Le Mans 24 hour
