I think everyone has one drink that they can no longer face due to one or more occasions of over-indulgence in their youth. Mine is Southern Comfort, even the thought of it is too much for me.
Haven't found one yet Tim and maybe (only maybe) I'm too sensible?? now!  Luckily, as I never drink to excess (ahem) that's never happened to me. But seriously Roger, whisky is an acquired taste, so you need to work at it. Believe me, if you do it will pay you back in spades. Maybe start with an Irish whiskey (such as Black Bush) with a splash of water. Irish whiskey is triple distilled and as smooth as Roger Moore. (Scotch, apart from Auchentoshan is double distilled) You can then start on the more challenging stuff. All this chat about whisky makes me think it's time for a wee dram of Old Pulteney. Cheers Giles - perhaps one of these days we'll meet up en mass in the Mogs. & you can hold a whiskey & whisky course to educate the non whisky drinkers like me! You'd have to treat me gently as I'd need some psychological counselling to overcome my previous bad experiences! What you say sounds sensible.

I have a hideous memory of very cheap "cider" from a shop in Bristol in the late 70s. 5L for £1.20 in a "bring your own" plastic can, the stuff was cloudy, flat and only made drinkable by adding fizzy lemonade. Seemed OK, ish, but the following morning..dear God, I could have given up alcohol, but turned to home brew beer.
I've never, ever, touched cider since. Peter J, you took back in time. I was never a drinker, not even a social drinker but when I was young(19 or 20) I had my "experience" with cider. I like my drinks on the sweet side but that night, a Christmas night...all I remember was trembling the whole night long, sleeping by moments and in the morning...1.000.000 football supporters chanting, clapping and jumping inside my head. It was that bad. I have barely touched cider ever since.

It wasn't fun...the shaking, the aversion to bright light, the nausea...
Most of the rest of the 5L can went down the drain. I don't think I drank anything other than tea or water for about a month.

Well, if I wanna drink something nice(generally with my  ) is has to be a good Vino. Whenever is possible, Malbec, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon or a good Torrontes. Or a really cold german-type beer, almost the only beer you can drink in my country. There's a brand called Imperial that specialize in non-that-common flavors: Weisser, Scotch Ale, Cream Stout, they're all excellent and if I wanna indulge myself, that's my choice. Or a champagne in any special ocasion but all the bottles I have(all gifts) are Brut or Extra Brut and I really don't like it ¡and no cyder!

I have heard people saying, that the 1966 Balvenie tends a touch to a somehow indescribably bitter note, in addition to it's mellowness?

Well
Invited to corporate hospitality to Leeds Uniited today and just on train back to Preston with a load of scuffers ( yes I am a snob)
Crap game but highlight was going into leeds after the game for several snifters of Belvenie whisky for the first time with friends
Have to say it just tasted like a blended cheap whisky
Maybe I need a bit of whisky education
