Congratulations on the "new" Morgan. New for you that is.

I don't know about the older cars but the fuel guage on ours is pretty accurate. If it is reading that far out I think it is something that can/should be fixed.

That's bad luck. Not sure what is typical mpg for yours but mine is about 42-44mpg. After a few fill ups you'll have a better idea and if you reset your trip meter each time you fill up you can be a bit more scientific.

Congratulations on the car and tough luck on running out of fuel. Whilst the current 4/4 is very economical I suspect yours will be more in line with many cars of its era and be more like 30mpg or so. I'm sure you will get a feel for it.

Fuel gauge on my '76 was pretty accurate.
You may only have a 9 gallon tank, as that was the norm back in the 70's (for 2 seaters).
I always used to aim to fill my old 4/4 by the 230 mile mark, depending on the kind of driving we were doing (Autosolo days nearer 180 miles ). My present 4/4 has a larger tank, but not much better on fuel and the fuel gauge is less accurate (never gets above 3/4). You will soon learn to use the odometer for refill timing.

About 15 years ago I travelled down to Ringway by train to buy and collect a VW polo for my wife from a good friend

I was told that it was fairly full of petrol.

On the way back up North the gauge went down to 3rd full and I ran out of petrol on the M6 in the pouring rain

Rang my friend while I was waiting for recovery "oh sorry Stewart completely forgot to mention the faulty fuel gauge"!

Finally got on my way after a couple of hours delay and was 2 miles from home approaching midnight, completely knackered after a long day and was stopped by police because the car as being registered to my friend 250 miles away.

Congrats on the car, when everyone remarks that Morgans make every journey memorable, I guess you didn't envisage your maiden journey being quite so memorable?

Congratulations on your choice of car, I like you have just done exactly the same and got my forst Morgan, I am due to retire on Thursday 16th April and am looking forward to geting out and about in it.
Reading about the fuel guage problem has given me the heads up and keep an eye on my fuel so as not to be caught out.

My 1986 4/4 has a 45 litre tank, I aim to fill up around the 250 mile mark, and usually get between 30 and 35 litres in depending on how heavy I've been with the right foot.

My gauge is almost entirely useless, it usually shows full for the first 50 miles, then plummets to empty, where it stays until I fill it up again. On rare occasions it will show half full, but I think it does that just to taunt me.

What's even more amusing is that when we've had the gauge out of the tank and tested it, it just a nice even progression across the scale.

You're a braver man than me then Mark, I wouldn't let supermarket fuel anywhere near my Morgan. BP or Shell premium are the only two I trust (or at a pinch Esso). Are you using a lead replacement additive as well?

With regards to the fuel gauge, I did once have a nervous journey looking for an open service station but it managed at least 25 miles with the needle on zero without running out. I've never checked the capacity though.

Good Afternoon and a belated welcome to TM. You choose a good car. Like you, my Morgan is a 4/4 4 seater in red. Occasionally you will see a side-on photo of it in the heading of this page. Watch out for my Morgan, as we can occasional be seen travelling to and from the Gurkha curry house in Liphook.

I'm from Reading and use Tony Howard's garage just south of Reading. Tony is our age, and has been working with Morgan all his life. Richard Thorne's is also well recommended.

I estimate on getting 300 miles per tank full. I always used the mileometer (?) rather than the petrol gauge. i get better mileage from non-supermarket petrol.
