Just noticed in one of my bike club magazines that the authorities in Paris are gradually phasing old vehicles from the capital. From July 2016 cars registered before 1997 and 2 wheelers before 2000 prevented from entering the city. Between 2017 and 2020 the ban will become total for some vehicles. There is as yet no news on exemptions for accredited classics. Perhaps some of our French colleagues will have more detailed info on this.

Large cities have to many people and machines in them.
Do people believe that they should still be able to burn hydrocarbons in the middle of a congested city in an older car because it is a classic??????????

This is true BUT - will not apply during week ends (only monday to friday) - anyway Paris is now just a nightmare to drive into even with a Smart - and you may rent an electric Autolib if you (really) have to go there. Avoid to go inside Paris, it's not interesting. Paris is full of Chinese, not because of their Louis Vuitton shopping but because they need to breathe that hydrocarbonated air.

Pollution is very popular with the government that allows it to resume some voters misguided environmentalists, the best previous Governement was the one who said that the Chernobyl radiation had stopped at the Belgian border.
There are many people who come to Paris by car because of lack of safety in public transport, it deleted the trains late at night in the suburbs because there is more passenger long time.
If there were no Chinese tourists there would certainly be less buses that go round and round all day in the capital there are even buses restaurant, the interest of the electric car is what is clean at or she rolls.

It's all part and parcel of the way the French administration behaves. In order to give the impression that that are actually DOING something, they spend their days thinking up things to ban (Old cars in Paris, models who are too thin, smoking electronic cigarettes & so on ad nauseam) instead of actually doing the important stuff, grasping the nettle and fixing the economy, putting in place policies to encourage job creation and so on.

A friend of mine, Paris resident, has sold his car some years ago as he sees no point struggling through Paris traffic and not getting a parking place than. Taxis are available but also slow in the crowded traffic. He became a real believer in public transport. For local flexibility he owns a small scooter. Outside trips are done by railway, plane or rent-a-car.
And Paris has the famous Honda GoldWing taxis - which I have not used yet.
I do understand that Paris wants to limit the number of cars in the city.

With actual smog apparently becoming a real problem, I can see why they need to do something.

It's a shame that all these city traffic calming measures are based on punitive taxation or can be overcome by someone having enough money to overcome the measures by affording the latest transport forcing those that can't afford it to always use public transport
I'd like to see something more creative which doesn't always benefit the wealthy where say all workers working in education and hospitals ie nurses, teachers are exempt and can use any legal car in the city
Otherwise expensive cities such as Paris and London will just cease to function due to essential workers finding it too expensive and impractical to live
