I really exist in the 19th century when it comes to IT and would appreciate the benefit of the knowledge that I know some of you guys have on the subject.

I bought a I Mac computer last year operating OSX Maverick. I've been very happy with it and it's been easy to use and intuitive. However for a while it has offered me a free update to Yosemite. I've read some bad user reports on Yosemite and don't want to instal something which will cause problems. On the other hand all future developments will be based on Yosemite and I don't want to be left behind.

Also upuntil last week the I Mac synchronised well with my I pad sharing photos etc. however I up graded IOS on the iPad to 8 ( I think) and now much of the shared functionality has gone. I'm told though that with Yosemite all will be good again.

I don't really know which way to jump and would really like to hear of others experience/advice.

Thanks in advance!

Andy.

I run Yosemite on 4 Mac computers, I've had no issues, it seems to run fine to me.

swmbojnr got a MacBook Pro for Christmas which was immediately updated to Yosemite and everything seems fine. swmbo, on the other hand has a 4 year old MacBook Pro and the update has caused the system to run much slower. I think, just like other computers, that the latest version of the OS is fine with the latest version of the computer (faster processor, more RAM, faster disk, etc.) but is often not so good with older systems.

I don't think you will have problems. If you have an iPhone you will be able to take calls on the Mac while your iPhone is elsewhere in the house. The 'flatness' of the icons may not be to your taste but little else is seriously different. It's not like going from Windows 7 to Windows 8. It just works.

I am no IT guru , but I do run a MacBook Pro (on Yosemite) , iPads and iPhones Just a couple of ideas for you to try:

1 Try plugging both iPad and MacBook into the mains via their chargers, and ensure both have access to WiFi. This allows the devices to synchronise.

2 If this does not work ensure that everything is all synchronised to the Cloud, some of the new drivers on Yosemite take a while to set up properly

3 If all of this still does not work book an appointment at the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple store to you.

Yosemite is just a more polished version of Mavericks really. Your Mac is more than capable of running it so I would go for it.

I agree with all the points made so far.
I have a 2012 Mac Book air and it is running Yosemite 10.10.3.
I also have a iPhone 5 running the latest version.
It all works. I do like being able to send text messages from the Mac...

My phone now wants to talk to my Apple Watch, which I don't have and I'm unlikely ever to have.

The biggest issues I have are with Firefox, each time OSX updates it updates and then seems to take some time to settle down.
